BEHIND THE WHEEL

Disclaimer : I do not own any of these characters, they belong to Channel 7. I am just borrowing them to write some fan fiction, just a dedicated fan with good intentions!!!

"Oh C'mon Ben, you are such a spoil sport, let me drive!" Scott whinged. Ben looked behind his shoulder at Scott who was pouting and stomping his feet. "You know the rules Scotty" Ben shrugged. Scott folded his arms and Ben giggled to himself. It was like babysitting lately with Scott having little temper tantrums at least once a day. Just then Scott dropped down onto his knees and put his hands in a praying position "Pweeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeease" he begged. Ben leant back on the ambulance trying to contain his laughter "OK, I give in, you can drive, on one condition". Scott jumped up from the ground and moved closer to Ben "what, what do I have to do? I will do anything, this is such a once in a lifetime experience". Ben smiled "no more googa gugga behaviour ok" Ben laughed. Scott nodded "OK I have been a little tired lately, too many late nights". Ben nodded knowingly, he felt a bit the same way himself so was happy to let Scott drive.

"978 you have a call to an MVA on Caringbah Road, Parramatta, possibly 2 casualties injured" the radio cried out. "978 responding" Ben talked into the radio then turned to Scott "OK big boy, here is your chance". Scott jumped into the driver's seat enthusiastically. Ben dragged himself into the passenger seat. "Do I get to use the sirens?" Ben asked. "Just drive, no funny business Scott" Ben said sternly "or it will be the last time". Scott's face dropped into a sulk. Working with Ben could be such a drag sometimes. They started driving.

"Scott you need to be in the left lane, cross over both lanes" Ben was beginning to get agitated. "I can't, there are too many cars" Scott replied. Ben's voice got louder "Good one, we just missed the turn, doesn't matter we can take the next one, but move into the damn left lane". "OK" Scott responded by moving into the middle lane. They kept driving until they came up to a truck in the middle lane in front of them and a car driving extremely slow in the left hand lane to account for the very wet weather and the storm that was closing upon them. Scott checked his mirrors and pulled out into the right lane to overtake the truck "Nooooo" Ben yelled "Scott, what are you doing? We have to turn". "It's ok, I have it under control" Scott smiled. Ben sat back in his seat and rolled his eyes. The turn was fast approaching and the traffic had thickened and slowed down. Scott looked at Ben for forgiveness as the left turn disappeared behind them. Ben turned and faced him "You just can't follow simple instructions can you?" he was almost yelling "Now this is what you are going to do. Put on your damn right indicator and turn around on the grass median strip" Ben pointed to the median stip. "Nah you have got to be kidding" Scott joked. Ben looked deep into his eyes "No, definitely NOT kidding". Scott obliged and put on his indicator, slowed down and turned onto the median strip. When a gap cleared in the traffic travelling in the other direction, Scott stomped onto the accelerator but nothing happened, the wheels spun and a loud noise came from underneath the ambulance. He tried again but the ambulance just rocked in its position and mud flew everywhere around them covering the windows.

Scott tried not to giggle "I think we are stuck". "I am going to absolutely kill you" Ben snarled as he got out of the ambulance. Ben confirmed that the ambulance was certainly bogged and it was raining heavily with no sense of easing outside. Scott had spun the wheels deeper into the mud and the ambulance was covered in mud and grass. Ben looked at Scott as if to say 'well?' Scott shrugged. Ben got onto the radio "978 to base" "Go ahead 978" "978 code 17, request back up of tow truck, unable to respond to last case in Parramatta" "Received 978, will request your back up, stand by" the radio operator ended. "So what now?" Scott asked. "Get back into the car and see what we can do, but let me do the driving" Ben answered. By this stage Ben and Scott were covered in mud, water and grass themselves are were beginning to notice the honks and waves and pointing that was going on around them. Scott began waving to all the cars and smiling. "This is not funny Scott, get in the car" Ben snapped. "C'mon see the funny side mate, what a story to tell Bron tonight" Scott nudged him as they climbed into the ambulance. A faint smile appeared on Ben's face. It was rather hilarious.

Half an hour passed before they saw the flashing yellow lights of the tow truck. The tow truck driver could not contain his laughter when he saw the ambulance "Which one of you idiots dug yourself into this hole?" he asked. Scott looked at the ground while Ben stared straight at him "It is insignificant, can you get us out? We have work to do". The tow truck driver explained what he wanted done which included shovelling a lot of the mud before they could get the ambulance out. Ben and Scott cringed as they shovelled mud away from the ambulance. There was not a dry patch on their uniform. Finally the tow truck driver hooked the ambulance up and pulled it onto the road. "Thanks mate" Scotty shook his hand. "No worries" he laughed as he got in his truck and drove away.

Ben jumped into the driver's seat and they pulled into McDonalds off the nearest exit. "Go in and get changed while I mind the ambulance, then I will get changed" Ben said to Scott. He appeared ten minutes later with a big mac and a large fries but at least he was dry. Ben rolled his eyes and went inside to get changed. Once fed and changed, they continued on their way. "We can't go back to the station like this, we better wash it" Ben exclaimed. "OK" Scott mumbled through a mouthful of fries. Ben pulled into the nearest service station which had a car wash. He leant out the window and put in some change. The brushes started up and the ambulance moved into the car wash. Scott giggled as the brushes moved over the top of them. Ben relaxed a bit while they sat in the car wash, he thought of Bron and how much he longed to hold her when he finished his shift.

His thoughts were interrupted by his feet feeling wet. He had changed his socks and couldn't understand why they felt wet. Ben looked down and saw soapy water filling the cabin. "Shit" he exclaimed "did you shut all the windows Scotty?" Scott was trying to climb up onto the passenger seat so his feet wouldn't get wet. "Where is it coming from?" Scott asked curled up on the seat as if there were crocodiles in the water below him. The brushes continued to brush and the water kept filling the cab. Ben was furious. His knees were now wet also and his feet slipped off the pedals of the car. Finally the car wash finished and they moved out. Scott and Ben were quick to open their doors and let the excess water out. The back of ambulance was soaked. "Your forgot the back door Scott, did you even bother checking to see if it was secured properly?" there was a pause. Ben continued "No, I didn't think so". "A least the outside is clean" Scott laughed. Ben didn't comment.

Ben had just finished mopping the back of the ambulance when Bron walked up. "Big fluid spray huh?" she asked. "No it is worse than that" Ben smiled. "Yeah?" Bron gave him a hug. "Yeah" Ben replied "but you come to expect these things when you give in and let Scotty behind the wheel. But as he said, it is a once in a lifetime experience, I will hold him to that". They both laughed and embraced in a romantic kiss.

THE END!
