The day had finally come. His last day on Ward 17. He was moving onto bigger and better things or so he hoped. It had taken a lot of thought to come to the decision to move to London and study to become a doctor. Leaving his family and friends behind was the hardest thing he had to do, especially his mum, but she knew that if she needed him he would be on the first plane back. And Jodi, he didn’t even know where she was. He wished he did, as he would have liked to say goodbye. He still loved her even after everything.
He walked through the door of Ward seventeen for the last time. As usual the ward was buzzing, but up on the wall was a huge Farewell Connor sign to mark the occasion. He put his things into his locker and felt a pair of arms wrap around his waist.
“Hey mate, you OK” asked Bron
“Yeah just realised this is my last day on the ward with all you guys. I’m going to miss you all” said Connor
“Yeah but just think of all the freeloaders you are going to have on your doorstep in London” she laughed
“That’d be right” he laughed back knowing she was the one he would miss more out of all his friends.
He headed to reception to get his room allocations and went about his work.
They had organised a night out at a local club. It was the talk of the day and everyone except Rose and Luke were going. Their shift ended and they all headed home to change.
Ben and Kylie met them at the house. They had a couple of drinks at home first talking and reminiscing about old times. Connor telling them all about what he thought of them when they first met.
“I always knew that Jared and I would be best mates. You have been here for me in bad times when I really needed you. You are a legend mate. Bron what can I say but love at first sight – sorry Ben – but I thought you were the most beautiful woman I had ever seen. Believe me it took till I met Jodi to get over you although deep in my heart I will always love you – You’re the greatest” he said walking over to her and giving her a hug
“Hey watch it” laughed Ben
“And Ben, I first met you through Steph and knew then that you were a great guy. We became friends but it wasn’t until after we lost Steph that we became mates. If I had to pick a guy for Bron besides myself then it would definitely be you mate. You make her happier than I have ever seen her and for that I thank you. Please look after her for me” said Connor as Ben put his arm around Bron and kissed her forehead.
Connor continued “Finally Kylie. You too I wish to thank for making my best mate happy. You two are meant to be together and I wish you both all the happiness in the world. Now enough of the soppy stuff lets go PARTY”
The five of them headed out the door towards the club to meet up with the others
They arrived at the club and headed to the rest of the group. Once again they started talking about old time and what Connor had got up to. One memory stuck out most in everyone’s mind and Bron recalled it for Kylie “ I will never forget the time that Von, Terri, Steph, myself and Connor dressed as the Spice girls. Connor looked absolutely gorgeous that day. A real stunner” laughed Bron as everyone else joined in.
“Yeah yeah you’re just jealous because I have better legs than you” he said slapping Bron playfully on the legs.
They ordered their drinks and were told a show would be starting shortly. Connor looked around and felt a bit out of place next to Bron and Jared as they were both with the ones they loved. God how he missed Jodi. He looked over at Jared and Kylie and smiled then turned toward Ben and Bron. She was sitting on his lap and they were laughing about something, then Ben leant in and kissed her playfully on the nose then they shared a lingering kiss. He was truly happy for them and he was glad that Bron had found true happiness at last. All he wished now was that Mitch, Terri and Von could find the same happiness.
Connor was bought out of his thoughts by the loud music that had filled the room. The spotlight lit up the stage and a woman dressed in a small pair of shorts and bikini top danced onto the stage . The crowd went wild obviously wanting the dancer to do what she did best - Pole dancing. Connor looked around the room and laughed as he saw the expression on all the guys faces. Desperate for action he thought to himself turning back to his friends. He wondered why they were all staring at him and not the stage. He decided to ignore them and concentrate on the show. He turned back to see the dancer and realised why his friends had been staring at him.
It was Jodi. Up there in front of everyone the woman he loved. Dancing to a group of hormone charged men. He couldnt beleive it. How could she do it. Surely money wasnt that tight that she had to resort to this.
He was about to leave when he noticed her looking at him. She stopped dancing and just stared.
Jodi ran from the stage crying. Embarrased about Connor seeing her like that. Bron went after her. Ben and Jared went to Connor.
"You ok mate" saud Jared
"Yeah just shocked I think" said Connor
"Go after her Connor. Sort this out before its too late" Said Ben
"Yeah" he replied heading to the back of the stage. The bouncer stopped him as he was about to go through to her but he relented after seeing how upset Connor was. He found Jodi crying and Bron was trying to comfort her. Bron looked up and saw Connor standing at the door.
"Um I am going to leave you two to talk" she said
"Thanks" said Connor
Bron headed back out to Ben and the group. Ben came to her and asked if everything was ok.
"Yeah I think they will be fine. She still loves him and vice versa. True love wins in the end, just look at us" she said leaning into his strong arms and smelling his scent. "I just hope that they end up as happy as us" she said
"YOu are a true romantic arent you, thats part of the reason I love you soo much" replied Ben
The group continued to party as Connor and Jodi talked. They were gone for a while and Bron started to worry.
"I hope I was right and they are getting back together. Maybe I should go check on them" she said
"No you dont. Leave them. They will sort this out in their own way. Now you I would like one of your famous kisses thanks" laughed Ben
"How could I refure" she laughed back and leant up and kissed him passionately
He leant down and whispered in her ear "Mmmmm I think we should go home. I am reeeeeaaaaaalllllllyyyy tired and need to get to bed" he said with a smirk on his face
"No No No you will have to wait until later Mr, I am staying to see what happens with Connor and Jodi" she said playfully pushing him away
"ohhhhh youre no fun" he walked away sulking
Bron just laughed.
She turned around to see where everyone else was and noticed Connor and Jodi heading toward the group. Their faces said it all.
The group could tell by the expression on their faces that it was a happy reunion. Connor and Jodi told them that they had discussed everything and worked it all out and that Jodi had decided to go to London with him.
They group were ecstatic. They were so happy things had worked out for them.
They partied long into the night then headed home.
Couple by couple they headed off to their rooms. Bron went to the bathroom and when she returned Ben was already in bed. She climbed in and cuddled into him. They laughed as they heard the noises coming from the other bedrooms
"Anyone walking past will think this is a brothel" she laughed. Then she went quiet. Ben realised somthing was wrong.
"You ok" he said
"Yeah Im fine. Just a little sad that I am losing one of my best friends tomorrow" she said
"Yeah I know, but you still have me and I promise never to leave you" he said kissing her forehead. She nuzzled into him and he rolled her over. "I love you Bron" he said
"I love you too and I know I wouldnt get through this if it wasnt for you" she said leaning in and kissing him.
He proceeded to kiss her then moving down her body onto her neck and then to her breasts. She arched her back and he took her nipple in his mouth and she moaned.
"Oh Ben I want you sooooo much" she cried
"Glad to hear it" he laughed as he moved his hand down her body and started to prepare her for the next phase of their lovemaking. She moaned loudly with pleasure and he sensed she was ready for him to enter her. He did. Their bodies moved well together as they always did and as usual their bodies exploded together leaving them both breathless.
He rolled her back over and laid on his side watching her and taking in every part of her body. She was so beautiful he thought. He wanted to make her happy for the rest of their lives. She was his life. He ran his hands up and down her body and leant in and kissed her again.
"What was that for" she asked smiling at him.
"just because I love you" he said
She moved closer to him and snuggled into his arms once again and they drifted off to sleep. Each knowing tomorrow would be hard for her.
Bron woke first and she got up and headed to the kitchen to make herself a cuppa. Jared joined her but they were both in their own little worlds. Finally Jared broke the silence.
"Bron I know this is not the best time but I need to talk to you about something" he said seriously
"What is it, Is something wrong" she saked concerned
"oh no nothing like that. Its just Kylie and I have been discussing this for a while and now with Connor leaving we thought now would be the right time" he said
"the right time for what Jared?" asked Bron
"We want to get our own place. We want to live together. BUT I wont start looking for somewhere until you have got two people to help with the rent" he said
"Jared thats great. I am happy for you. Sad for me as I am losing a great friend and flatmate but happy for you" she said
"You are not losing a friend Bron. I'll still see you at work and we will still be mates. I am not leaving the country" Jared said only realising after he said it that she was feeling that she was now losing two mates rather than just one.
"Oh Bron I am sorry. I've been a bit insensitive. You are going thrugh enough with Connor leaving, you didnt need this as well" he sad
"Dont be silly. You have your won life to think about and I want you to be happy. So dont worry about me. I will be fine" she said
"Thanks. I had better get this to kylie" he said holding up the coffee.
Bron headed outside to get some fresh air. The cool morning air hit her as if she had been slapped in the face. It bought her into reality. She was losing her two good mates. Sure Jared would still be around but it wouldnt be the same. It never would be again. She began to cry when she felt a strong pair of arms wrap around her.
"Hey you ok. Jared just came and told me about them wanting their own place. You ok about it" asked Ben
"Yeah I am really happy for them. Its just another chapter in my life is closing and thats sad for me. And the thought of finding two new people to live with is a bit scary. What if they arent as great as these guys" she sobbed
"You dont have to find two new flatmates you know" he said
"What are you talking about. You know I cant afford to live by myself" she said
"Bron I was going to ask you this later anyway but why not come and live with me. We are virtually together everynight anyway either at your place or mine, so why not make it permanant" Ben asked
Ben you don’t have to ask me to move in with you. I don’t want you to feel sorry for me” cried Bron
“That’s not why I am asking you. I was going to ask you tonight when we went to dinner but now just seemed to be the right time. I love you and I want to be with you always. Please at least think about it” he said
“I cant believe you actually want me to move in with you.” She said
“Why wouldn’t I want you too. I love you with all my heart and I want you to be happy always” said Ben
“Its just I am so used to people leaving me. I am scared that you are going to as well, so you wanting me to live with you is just such a shock, but I would love to live with you” she said jumping into his arms and kissing him.
“Hey whats going on out here” said Connor as he and Jodi appeared in the doorway.
“Ben has just asked me to move in with him and I said yes” said Bron
“Oh that’s great guys, congrats” said Jared joining them.
“You and Kylie don’t have to worry about finding somewhere now, you can stay here” said Ben
“oh that’s fantastic” said Kylie
“OK guys lets get moving one of us has a plane to catch” said Jared with them all heading inside.
They all headed to the airport. They sat in the bar until Connors flight was called. They all headed to the gate to say their goodbyes. Ben and Kylie were the first. Ben shaking his hand and wishing him luck and Kylie hugging him. Jared went to his friend and hugged him. “Take care mate. Knock em dead over there”. He stepped back as Bron moved forward. They embraced. Bron burst into tears. “You are my best friend, I am really going to miss you” said Connor. “Now you take care of that man of yours and of yourself. I expect to see the both of you over in London very soon and don’t forget to send me an invite to the Wedding” he laughed
“Your pretty sure of us aren’t you” she said
“Yeah because I know how much you love him and he loves you. Don’t stuff this up Bron” he said
“I wont I promise” she said leaning up and kissing him goodbye
She turned and went back to Ben feeling better in his arms. Jodi walked up and kissed Connor goodbye with the promise of seeing him next week once she had sorted things out here.
He walked through the doors towards the plane turning back to them and waving. He turned back and walked out of their sight and their lives - for now at least.
They all stood watching the empty doorway. Jared and Bron realising what a great friend they had just lost. Bron let the tears flow and Ben held her to him trying to comfort her. He knew she loved Connor but he also knew it was more as a brother than a love interest. He felt for her. Connor had been a great mate to her and she would miss that but he vowed that he would always be there for her and he also knew that no matter what the distance Connor and Bron would remain close.
They all headed home. Ben and Bron dropping Jodi off. “You going to be ok” Ben said to her
“Yeah, I’ll be fine I only have to wait a week and I will be with him forever” she said “I just have to pack my things up now”
“I’ll come over and help you tomorrow if you want” said Bron
“That’d be great mate, thanks” said Jod
“See you tomorrow then” said Bron as they drove off
“Where to now?” asked Ben
“How bout our place” she said smiling at him
“Your wish is my command” he said taking her hand
They arrived at Bens place and headed inside. He went and made them a coffee and when he returned he found her asleep on the lounge. He picked her up and carried her into their room and placed her on the bed. He laid beside her taking in her beauty. He fell asleep shortly after.
She awoke in his arms unsure of how she got there. She laid there thinking about all that had happened today. One chapter in her life had ended and another was just beginning. She looked up at Ben and placed a kiss on his lips, knowing that this was where she was meant to be.
Well that’s it
