“What happened?” Mitch asked Ben as Bron was wheeled into Emergency.

“She overdosed on sleeping pills. I don’t know how many she took,” He replied.

“How did that happen?”

“She tried to end her life,” Ben said quietly. Mitch stared at him in disbelief. “We’ll wait here.” Mitch nodded and went to treat Bron. Ben, Scott and Connor went and sat down in the waiting room.

“Bron, before we take you up, I need to ask you some questions.” Mitch said. He motioned at the nurse in the corner to leave. Mitch sat on the bed. “Did you deliberately try to harm yourself by taking the sleeping pills?”

“What do you think?!” She said angrily. Mitch went quiet.

“I’m sending you up to Ward 17. I’m going to organise someone to talk to you.” Bron rolled over and tried to ignore him. The harsh lights of emergency were in her eyes and she didn’t feel like talking to anyone. “Why did this have to happen?” She asked herself. “Why couldn’t I have just died?”

Mitch opened the curtain and took her to the lift. Ben, Connor and Scott followed. There was silence before they arrived at Ward 17. Terri ran over.

“Bron! What are you doing here?” she asked. Bron closed her eyes and rolled over. Terri looked at solemn Ben and glanced at Mitch. She took her into room one and quickly left to talk with Mitch. Ben followed Bron in leaving Connor and Scott waiting outside.

“Please just leave me alone Ben, and get on with your life,” Bron said. Ben ignored her and sat on her bed. He leaned forward and took her hands in his.

“Bron, please tell me what’s wrong,” he asked gently. Her watery eyes wandered around the room, wanting to be anywhere but looking into his. Ben leaned closer. He could see her lip trembling and the hands he was holding shaking violently. He squeezed them tighter and tried again. “Bron, why did you try to hurt yourself?” She was silent for a moment.

“Because I’m a piece of crap and you don’t deserve that. I’m not allowed to have you, and your not allowed to have me. You were meant for someone better.” Bron blurted out. She swallowed down her tears in an effort to be dignified, but it was all too much and they started to gush out. Ben leaned over and gave her a hug. She tried to resist him. “Please don’t make this harder than it is already Ben,” she choked. He put his hands around her shoulders and broke away.

“I love you Bron and I don’t want to lose you, ever.” He could feel tears coming but pushed them back forcefully. “You’re not a piece of crap at all. You’re beautiful. We all care about you, Bron.”

“Why couldn’t I have just died! Everyone would have been better off without me! And you’d have someone who could do you justice.” Bron cried. Ben stared in disbelief, heartbroken.

“You don’t seriously think that do you Bron?” He asked. Bron sunk back down and turned away from him.

“Of course I do because it’s true.” She said quietly, the pillow muffling her voice. Ben leant back and put his hand to his mouth.

Terri walked up to Mitch.

“Can I talk to you for a second?” Terri asked. Mitch nodded and followed her into her office. Terri sat down behind her desk and paused for a moment. “I need to know what’s going on with Bron.” Mitch bowed his head slightly.

“Last night,” Mitch took a deep breath. “Bron overdosed on sleeping pills in an attempt to end her life.” He said slowly. Terri sat up in shock.

“How is she, I mean, when did this happen?” She asked.

“She was obviously in a very depressed mood last night and swallowed a large amount. Connor found her just in time.” He explained. Terri leaned forward.

“Do you know why?”

“I haven’t talked to her yet, Ben’s in with her now.”

"I'm really, I don't know what to say. She'd been a bit funny this past week, you know, coming to work late and being really tired, a bit un-happy looking but I never thought that she felt like that." Terri said to herself partly.

“No one did.” Mitch said.

“And Connor found her what, dead?”

“Very close to it, she was unconscious but he got her awake. Given an hour or two and she would have been in a really bad way.” Terri nodded. “It’s like history repeating itself,” he said quietly, avoiding eye contact.

“What do you mean?” She asked.

“Rose,”

“Oh, Mitch.” There was silence for a few moments.

“Are you putting her into psych?” Terri asked.

“I suppose I’ll have to - transfer to St. Angeles or something, obviously she can’t stay here. “ Terri nodded in agreement.

“Beep!” Mitch checked his pager.

“I have to go,” he said and left the office.
