Rafe Kovich, Lucy's cousin, came to Port Charles to help the residents of PC fight Caleb, who is a vampire. Rafe is a vampire slayer from Transylvania. The Kovich family comes from a long line of vampire slayers, and Rafe had devoted his life to ridding the world of evil. But in 1991, Caleb succeeded in killing Rafe, and Rafe then became an angel.
Now in 2001, Caleb is back and is wreaking havoc for many people in PC. It is Rafe's mission to help them fight Caleb and get their lives back to normal.
Alison is the granddaughter of wealthy Amanda Barrington and is in love Jamal. She and Jamal are trying to help their friends Jack and Livvie overcome the evil Caleb.
When Rafe takes Alison and Jack to a monastery to get clues on Caleb, a tree falls on Alison! Rafe tells Jack to get help. When Jack is gone, Rafe puts his hands on Alison and a warm light appears. Alison wakes up, healed, feeling no pain whatsoever.
One day, when Rafe sees a dead bird, he revives it, just like he did with Alison. Alison witnesses this and discovers that Rafe is an angel. Alison keeps his secret, although she almost slipped and told Jamal. Rafe, meanwhile, shows Alison a little magic, making a pink rose appear for her. Rafe starts to fall in love with her.
When Caleb is finally defeated, Rafe's mission is to fix all of the broken hearts that Caleb left in his wake. Alison helps Rafe, although Rafe is not always enthusiastic about this since he knows he will be leaving soon and he is growing more and more in love with her.
Meanwhile, Alison is having her own problems with her boyfriend Jamal. Jamal recently found out that he has a daughter with Valerie, who is determined to get Jamal back. This puts strain on Alison and Jamal's relationship. And when Rafe lets his feeling take charge of him and kisses Alison, she kisses him back.
Rafe has until midnight, Christmas Eve, to get all of the couples back together. He says his goodbyes to Alison, who is on her way to Chicago to meet Jamal (because his little girl is sick), but due to weather, Ali can't make her flight. So she goes to the Christmas Eve Party instead, which is actually Kevin and Lucy's surprise wedding.
So Rafe and Alison spend one more night together, dancing and with Rafe doing more magic tricks for Alison. And Rafe finally accomplishes his mission of getting the couples back together. Then later that night, he and Alison say goodbye. Rafe vanishes into thin air as Alison watches with tears in her eyes.
But apparently, Rafe didn't accomplish his mission. Not all of the couples are back together, because Alison and Jamal are still having problems. Alison falls on ice and hits her head, which lands her at GH. She tries to call Jamal, but he is too busy.
Rafe begs his boss Ed to let him go back, and eventually, he does get to go back. But, Rafe had to give up his angel powers forever. Now, he tries to focus on getting Alison and Jamal back together, but with Rafe's growing feelings for the girl, and Alison's feelings toward Rafe...hmmm, makes it pretty impossible!
The two spend an afternoon together in the snow, and end up kissing again. Alison, feeling guilty, takes off and runs back to Jamal. When she gets home, she sees that Jamal has invited Valerie to stay again. Alison leaves Jamal. But when Jamal apologizes, she decides to forgive him. Meanwhile, Rafe decides to tell Alison how he feels about her. He shows up with pink roses. However, Rafe doesn't get the chance to tell her because Alison says that she and Jamal have decided to work things out.
Alison tells Rafe that she can't see him anymore, which breaks his heart. Later, Alison sees Rafe's journal and reads it. She is shocked to discover his feelings for her. In fact, learning how Rafe feels about her stops her from making love to Jamal.
When Valerie goes psycho and tries to kill Alison, Jamal comes to the rescue and tries to get the gun away from her, but in the process, he accidently kills her. The guilt is heavy on Jamal, and he ends up taking his anger out on everyone, especially Alison. Eventually, the two break up. Rafe tries to comfort her, but Alison doesn't want to see Rafe either. She is too confused.
When Alison decides to move back in with Nana, Rafe refuses to allow her to do this. He didn't want Alison to move back to a place where she felt unloved and unhappy. She deserved better. Alison, obviously trying to fight her feelings for Rafe, tries to get Rafe to leave her alone! Rafe then takes matters into his own hands and kidnaps her...taking her to an old barn.
Eventually, the two finally get their feelings out in the open, and they make love for the first time! When they fantasize about being together on a tropical beach, Ed transports them to one as a Valentine's Day gift. Rafe and Alison decide that even though they only have a few short weeks together, they will make it count, because the time they have together is like a gift.
Alison wants to keep a part of Rafe with her, so she asks him to make a baby with her. Unfortunately, Rafe tells her that it's not in the cards for them. Ed told him so.
As time goes on, Rafe and Alison grow more and more closer, which makes the inevitable goodbye even harder. They go to their special place...the barn. There, two angel kids help Rafe and Alison deal with the fact that even though they will not be together, they will always be together in their hearts. Afterwards, the two get "married" in their own little ceremony.
Time is running out for Rafe and Alison. Rafe had learned that someone would die soon, and he had been terrified that it would be Alison. He wants Alison to live a long and happy life. When Alison shows Rafe a portrait of her great, great, great grandmother Rebecca, Rafe notices that she looks just like Paige. (Who was revealed to be related to Alison) Fearing for Alison's safety, he takes her away so that Paige won't go near her. (He was afraid Paige wanted to take Alison back, she is an angel too) They spend so much time trying to get away that suddenly, the time to say goodbye is here.
Rafe and Alison share a tearful goodbye. And then he vanishes. Alison, upset over losing Rafe, trips on a railroad track and gets her foot caught. A train comes, but at the last minute, she is saved by Paige! In Heaven, Rafe thanks Paige for what she did and apologizes for keeping her away from meeting Alison.
Alison finds it harder and harder each day to go on without Rafe. When her ggg grandma Rebecca comes to life so to speak and steps out of the portrait, she helps Alison become closer to Rafe by using her magic candles. Alison lights the Love candle and feels closer to Rafe. She dreams of him, and Rafe has the same dream.
In the dream, Rafe gave Alison a pink rose. When Alison awakes, she sees the rose! In Heaven, Rafe is scolded by Ed for pulling that stunt with the rose and is put on "conscience duty" as punishment. Rafe can't get Alison off his mind though. When an old enemy, James, starts to tempt Rafe with a life on earth with Alison, Rafe finds it hard to resist.
Eventually, James get Rafe to break and he signs over his soul to be with Alison, especially when James tell him of how much trouble Alison is in. (She was accused of killing Kevin, which she is innocent of)
Ed, who was revealed to be Rafe's father, makes a second deal with James in an attempt to save his son. If Rafe and Alison find their way back to each other, then he gets to live a human life on earth with her. If not, James not only gets Rafe's soul, but Ed's as well. However, with the fact that James took away Rafe's memory of Alison and Port Charles, and that Livvie finds Rafe and is hellbent on revenge against her former friend (she hides Rafe), Rafe and Alison have a long road ahead of them.
Rafe and Alison, as expected, have the biggest challenge ahead of them. While Alison was busy being accused of murder, Rafe was being manipulated by Livvie, who soon falls in love with the angelic Rafe. Livvie tells an amnesiac Rafe that she and Rafe were lovers, and Rafe, desperately wanting to feel like he had someone to love in his life before his memory loss, believed her. But Rafe couldn't help but feel like there was something missing...someone he was connected to...but who? And when Rafe started to feel a connection to things such as pink roses and the old barn, and couldn't understand why, Livvie was quick to tell him that those were special things to them. That was why he felt such a strong connection.
Alison, more and more everyday, began to feel as if Rafe was haunting her, and she even kept feeling as if Rafe was right there in the room with her.
Littie did she know that Rafe wasn't so far away. When Alison saw a pink rose left by Rafe outside the Recovery Room, she was convinced that Rafe must have returned. But she was confused as to why he hadn't come to her yet.
Livvie continued her lies and manipulations, but feared that Rafe's memory would return, especially when he learned that he and Alison were once involved. Livvie explained to Rafe that he left Alison for her. The best plan, in her opinion, was for her and Rafe to leave PC. And the best option to hold on to Rafe...get married. But with Rafe's numerous questions about Alison, Livvie decided that she needed to throw him off. So she hired a girl to pretend to be "Alison" in hopes of making Rafe realize that she was not the one for him. And it worked, and eventually, Rafe agreed to marry Livvie, since he was brainwashed into believing that they had been in love all along. But before the wedding, he had a shocking flashback. Who was that girl??
Alison, meanwhile, was still on trial, and she was reliving her ggg Rebecca's life in a sense that the same events that happened to her were happening to Alison. Rebecca, fearing that Kevin would try to close down Alison's candleshop, had made him disappear by lighting a candle, and the only way he could return is if someone were to light that candle again. Jack, Jamal, and her lawyer Kate helped Alison prove that Rebecca was innocent of the crime she was accused of, and therefore, they hoped Alison would be free as well. However, Livvie made sure that the police would have enough evidence to convict her...she planted her Uncle Ryan's ashes (Kevin's twin brother) on the Barrington grounds. Then, Livvie betrayed her friend in the worst way. She tricked Rafe into marrying her in the barn...of all places.
The trial proved to be stressful for Alison, so stressful that she had an aneurysm and collapsed.
Meanwhile, a series of chance events happened. Jack and Lucy were on to Livvie's latest scheme, the planting of the ashes. And Rafe found the candle that would bring Kevin back. Livvie was lured to the hospital, and Rafe followed. He left the candle lit in the hospital chapel, bringing Kevin back and freeing Alison, But now, it looked to be too late for Alison, as she was close to death.
Livvie tormented an unconcious Alison with the fact that she set her up and had married Rafe...who was back. Alison, meanwhile, took a heavenly journey and wondered if she was dead.
As fate would have it, Rafe walked into Alison's room when he noticed his chain on the floor. (Rafe lost it at the cabin, Jack found it, then threw it away, then Kate found it, held on to it, then Alison found it, put it on her neck, then collapsed. Now, the nurse had dropped it.)
Rafe wanted to know who was in that room? He walked in and saw Alison, the girl who had been in his dreams. He couldn't resist kissing her on the lips, and Alison awoke!
However, what had seemed like a dream come true for Alison suddenly turned into one huge nightmare when she realized that Rafe had no memory of her and was married to Livvie! Alison wasn't about to let Rafe go without a fight, and was prepared to go against Livvie to win back Rafe...and then, Livvie decided to pull the pregnancy card.
Of course, she wasn't pregnant, but when the Avatar came to town and was beating up criminals, well Livvie turned to him for help. The Avatar was an evil spirit that needed a host to survive...and Frank was that host. So the Avatar took over Frank and now Frank was going around beating up criminals, getting more powerful with praises from the town. Livvie slept with Frank to get pregnant, and in exchange, she would keep his secret.
Meanwhile, Alison was finding it very hard to deal with the fact that Livvie was pregnant with Rafe's child, or so she thought, and that Rafe was going to stay with Livvie out of obligation.
Her gut instict was that Livvie was lying though, and she tried to convince Rafe of this, although unsuccessfully. However, when Jack locked the two in the attic, Alison did get Rafe to admit that he felt something for her, and the two ended up in a liplock.
But in the end, Rafe decided that he needed to forget Alison and focus on a life with Livvie, b/c after all, they were having a baby, right? So the two shared another emotional goodbye in the park.
Alison, upset over Rafe, turned to Jack for comfort. Jack tried to cheer Alison up by helping her celebrate her 21st birthday. Later, Alison agreed to be Jack's model, since he was up for a photography job and needed some kind of portfolio. Jack starts to have a little crush on Alison and lately, he is the only one that makes her smile. Eventually, the two end up kissing. Alison, however, feels things are just too weird and wants her and Jack to just remain friends.
In the meantime, Rafe and Ian teamed up to focus on fighting the Avatar, and Alison wanted to help. Livvie, however, fearing she would lose Rafe if he learned about the Avatar, is doing everything in her power to stop him. But even Frank the Avatar knows that Alison is the one Rafe truly loves, and he torments Livvie with this fact, which she vehemently denies. "He loves me, not Alison!" she claims.
Frank does not like that Ian and Rafe are interfering in his plans, so he decides to give Rafe and Ian a warning by taking the two people they love the most...Danny and Alison. Frank, as the Avatar, traps Alison and Daniel on the edge of a cliff. (Alison was taking Danny home as a favor to the nanny)
Rafe, sensing Alison was in danger, called Ian and they all came to their rescue.
However, after Ian left, Alison fell off the cliff! She was hanging on by a ledge and Rafe desperately tried to reach for her. He called out, "I came back for you, now you come back for me!"
There was no way Rafe could reach Alison but suddenly, it was as if magic happened, and Rafe willed her to come to her and he grabbed her arm and pulled her to safety.
Once he rescued her, Alison fell into his arms.
Alison tried to get Rafe to think about how he was able to pull her up when he couldn't reach her? He said he just couldn't have let her fall. Alison wanted Rafe to admit that in that moment when he saved her, he felt magic and that deep down, he knew that she was his one true love, not Livvie. But in the end, Rafe said he had to get back to Livvie, and Alison was once again heartbroken. Rafe then wondered to himself...how was he able to save Alison?
Lucy, knowing *something* was just not right with this whole situation of Rafe being back but w/o his memory, talked Alison into having a seance.
The women managed to contact Ed and Alison and Lucy learned that Rafe had sold his soul...that was the price he paid to return. Then, Alison got a sign in the form of a bright light that left behind a piece of paper. On the paper was the quote, "A soul without love is a soul lost." Alison and Lucy realized that Alison had to make Rafe fall in love with her again in order to save his soul.
Meanwhile, Rafe and Ian were ready to expose the Avatar, but Livvie was determined to ruin their plans. Livvie set the silo (where the guys were holding the avatar) on fire, Frankatar escaped with Karen's help, and Rafe and Livvie were trapped in the burning debris. Alison, meanwhile, had plans to go to Bermuda with Jack for a modeling gig, but in light of the news about Rafe and his soul, she canceled the trip. Lucky thing, b/c if Alison had left, she wouldn't have been there to find Rafe and Livvie. With help from Ian, the two rescued them.
Kevin eventually found out that his daughter had blackmailed a nurse to change the paternity results that Lucy had arranged for Livvie to take. He informed Lucy of this, and Lucy then told Alison. Alison was overjoyed that Rafe was NOT the father of the child Livvie was carrying! However, she opted not to tell Rafe. If their love was truly meant to be, he had to come to her on his own. But it was hard at times, especially those times when she felt herself closer to Rafe, like when he admitted that if things were different, he wanted to be with her...
And finally one day, Rafe decided that he couldn't ignore his true feelings anymore. He wanted to spend a day with Alison and see where things went. It just seemed so right.
So the two made a park date. Rafe was excited and he waited in the park for her. Alison was ecstatic...maybe she and Rafe had a chance after all! He was finally realizing his true feelings! But before she could make it to the park, Frankatar had kidnapped her. It was Livvie's little idea of revenge. Livvie had blackmailed Frank to get rid of Alison, permanently.
Frankatar almost killed Alison, but in the end, she convinced him not to if she left town and never returned. After being released, Alison made her way through the woods. She wasn't going to leave town. Her chance with Rafe was more important. But then, she caught her foot in an animal trap.
As Rafe waited, there was still no sign of Alison. He began to get worried. He became suspicious and wondered if Livvie was involved. Livvie claimed she wasn't, and even went as far as to empty out Alison's closet to make it appear that she had left. Rafe wasn't buying her lies and finally told her that it was OVER!!
Still worried about Alison, Rafe ran through the woods to find her. He saw in his mind that Alison was in trouble. Eventually, his instincts told him to go to the barn. He remembered that it was a place where Alison said she felt safe. There, Rafe admitted his true feelings...it was Alison he loved, not Livvie. Then he recarved the heart that Livvie had once sanded away.
As fate would have it, Alison managed to get out of the trap and went to the barn...where Rafe had been waiting for her. Alison noticed that Rafe had recarved the heart. Why?
Rafe said it was b/c he loved her. He had not remembered anything, but he didn't need memories. He had fallen in love with her now, just as she was. Then, they kissed!
The kiss then returned Rafe's memory! Rafe and Alison were then overjoyed!
But unfortunately, Livvie was not going to let Rafe and Alison have a "happily ever after" if she had anything to do with it. As Rafe and Alison were rejoicing in finally being back together, Livvie showed up at the barn and shot Rafe in the back. Alison begged Rafe to not give up, she wanted to get help! But Rafe, knowing that he didn't have much time, said that all he needed was her. Sadly, the two said goodbye once again, kissed, and Rafe died for a second time.
