1. Cables used inside a machine.

Floppy Disk Drive Data Cable.

34pin FDD data cable. Used to connect the FDD(s) to the FDD controller. Wire 10-16 are twisted, so always connect that side to floppy A:. That's why no jumpers are used on FDDs.

Hard Disk Drive Data Cable.

40pin HDD data cable. Drives can be connected in any order, but have to be jumpered as Master and Slave.

Power Cable

This cable is used to supply with the necessary power, all of the parts. FDDs, HDDs, CD-ROMs, ZIP-Drives, etc. Each color means a different voltage.

Top

Audio Cable

This cable transfers the audio signal from the CD-ROM unit, to the Sound Card. Otherwise, we can't hear any sound when an audio CD is playing.

Front Panel LEDs and Switches

These cables are normally connected to the motherboard. The LEDs, let us know if the machine is on, when the HDD is busy, or if we use an older system, if it's working on Turbo Mode. Some of these cables are connected to switches. These are used in order to turn the system on, or reset it.

Fan Cables

Cables used to connect the fans to the power supply, or the motherboard.

Top

Wake-Up Cables

Used to connect a peripheral card to the motherboard, so the system is turned on when there is activity on that cards. For example Modems or Network Interface Cards.

2. Cables used to connect the system with it's peripherals

Network Cables

Used to connect the system, using the NIC Card, to a Network. There are two types of network cables. The BNC (left) and the UTP ones (right).

Top

Phone Cables

Used to connect the system, using the Modem, to the phone line, in order to send faxes, call someone, or access the Internet or a local Intranet.

Top

VGA Cable

Used to tranfer the VGA signal from the system, using the VGA card, to the monitor.

Top

Keyboard Cable

Used to transfer the signal and the power supply from the motherboard, to the keyboard.

Top

Mouse Cable

Used to transfer the signal and the power from the motherboard, to the pointing device (mouse).

Top

Printer Cable

Used to transfer the data from the motherboard, to the printer and the opposite.

Top

Serial Cables

Cables used to connect devices that use a serial communication, to the serial port on the motherboard. For example, External Modems, Serial Mice etc.

Top

Parallel Cables

Cables used to connect devices that use a parallel communication, to the serial port on the motherboard. For example, Printers, Scanners, Plotters etc.

Top

USB Cables

Used to connect devices that use a USB communication, to the USB port on the motherboard. For example, Digital Cameras, Webcams, USB Printers, USB Scanners etc.

Top

PS/2 Cables

Used to connect devices that use a PS/2 connector, to the PS/2 port on the motherboard. For example, PS/2 Keyboards and PS/2 Mice.

Top

RCA and SVHS Cables

Used to connect the system, using a TV-Tuner or a VGA card that has a TV-OUT connector, to a Television, a VCR or a Camera.
