NFTA plays fair by lowering Game Day bus fare for Bills fans

Buffalo Bills fans who ride the Metro Bus to Ralph C. Wilson Stadium have reason to cheer — they’ll be paying less for Game Day Express service this season.
A change in federal public transit rules is forcing the Niagara Frontier Transportation Authority to either end premium pricing for shuttle service to Orchard Park or halt the long-standing service.

“We didn’t want to end the service. It’s something we’ve offered since the stadium opened,” Meckler said. “But we can’t run afoul of [Federal Transportation Administration] rules, so we’ll drop the price back to regular route fares.”
The NFTA has charged a flat $7 round-trip fare for its Game Day Express regardless of where riders board the shuttle. The switch to route pricing will drop the price to between $3.50 and $5.20 per rider, depending on their trip.

Fans of the Tennessee Titans, Baltimore Ravens and Orioles, Seattle Mariners, Washington Redskins and other professional sports teams have seen the brakes put on their game day service, as transit authorities scramble to comply with new FTA rules.
The revised shuttle regulations, which went into effect May 1, are aimed at ending what private transportation firms argue is unfair competition from public agencies.
The new rule is also affecting specialized public transit service linking riders to cultural venues, racetracks, casinos and other special-interest destinations. Where private operators are filling the void, fans generally pay game maker kirby steeper fares than those charged by public transit agencies.
The NFTA, which averaged around 21 riders on each of its seven Bills buses last season, has never the game rapper made money on the service, even with the $7 fare, game to play now according to game room decor Meckler.

NFTA executives hope the price cut will attract more fans to the shuttle service, helping to recoup some of the lost revenue.
The NFTA board is expected to authorize the Game Day Express fare modification at its Aug. 25 session, formalizing the price cut in time for video game statistics the first preseason home game against the Detroit Lions on Aug. 28.
Meckler said the board members will vote ahead of a required public hearing on the fare change to avoid disrupting the service.
“We’ll still schedule a hearing in September, but I can’t imagine we’ll hear much opposition to a fare decrease,” Meckler said.
