NINE MONTHS OLD

July 30, 2002

I can't believe how much Alex has changed in this last month. All of a sudden he wants to be grown up. About a week ago he took his first steps. Now he wants to practice all the time. And when he falls he gets so frustrated. He wants to already know how. So we spend a lot of time practicing walking now. He's getting pretty good and can go several steps before falling.

He also has decided that he wants table food and is boycotting babyfood. I can sometimes sneak a couple of bites in, but for the most part he just wants what we're eating. Unfortunately, he's still not very good at chewing and doesn't quite have his pincher grasp down, so table food can be a bit challenging. I cut it up into the tiniest of pieces and give it to him on a fork. It takes so long that many times I end up giving his Gerber Wagon Wheels or something like it to make sure he's filled up. The good news is that he will eat anything we are eating so I've managed to keep the vegetables flowing.
Sleeping is kind of hit or miss. When he has a good night he can sleep from 9pm until 5am, eat, and then sleep until 7. Lately most nights have not been good nights and he is up at least every two hours if not every hour. He finally broke through the gummy grin and got two teeth so I'm hoping the bad nights are either the teeth or practicing walking in his sleep.
He plays with his brother quite a bit. The other day his daddy blocked off the garage and let him run around in the walker outside. It's the first time he's been given any freedom outside and he loved it. He chased Nicholas all around the garage and got mad everytime Nicholas went outside the boundaries. But boy were those some dirty feet when we came inside.
