In this section, I think the character tries making a point that war is not a fun thing.  For one, it’s scary being out there in the battlefield.  In chapter 4, the author, Mark Bowden writes, “Stebbin’s shook with fear.” (Chapter 4, page 260).  I think Mark Bowden is trying to show that in war anyone can get scared.  Mark Bowden also writes “You could be prepared for the sights and sounds and smells of war, but the horror of it, the blood and gore and heart-rending screams of pain, and sense of death perched right on your shoulder, breathing in your ear, their was no preparation for that.” (Chapter 4, Page 260).  I think with this statement, Bowden wants to get clear that you could never get ready to see so many people get hurt, shot, and killed.  Finally, Mark Bowden tries making points that war is bad and everyone should live in peace and harmony.
