Alliteration is the repeating of the first consonant sound in close proximate to each other.

      "Stretching south"- the author used this to portray the long part of the Ranger perimeter.

      "Start shooting"- the author used this to portray the surprise of the man delivering the message.

      "Some kind of storage shack"- in this part the author used alliteration to portray confusion.

      "Treatment tactic"- the author s telling us that the doctor has another type of treatment.

Onomatopoeia is the usage of words to describe sounds. They are used because their pronunciation is like that of the sound.

      "Kabang"- the author used this word to portray the sound of a heavy gun.

      "Whooo"- this word is used by the author to portray the relief of a solider.

      "Banging"- this is used to show the sound of the falling bullet casings.

      "Clicking"- the author used this to show the sound of metal hitting metal.

      "Boom"- this is the sound of a rocket from a Little Bird.

Simile is used to compare to different things. They must resemble each other in at least one way.

      "Sounded like the city of Mogadishu had sprung viciously back to life"- the author used this to show how much fire the men were taking of the trip over the road.

      "Sound like a giant piece of Velcro being ripped open"- this simile is use to explain the sound of a rocket at impact.

      "Shocked as though some had slapped him"- the author used this simile to explain the feeling of knowing you have been shot.

Assonance is repeating vowel sound in successive or proximate words.

      "Down and found"- this is just an action took by a ranger in the field.

      "Combat zone"- this is how a Ranger describes where he is at.

      "Combat jack"- this is a running joke with all the Rangers.

Allusion is a reference to a famous person or event, but is not formal. When used the audience is supposed to know what you are talking about.

      "Green Room"- is a reference to a place of mind surfers talk about, and what the Rangers are now feeling.

      "They hate the cans! Stay away from the cans!"- this is a reference to a movie that the Rangers are now quoting.

      "Bleeding hulk" - this is a reference to the comic Hulk.

Metaphor is a comparison of two different things by implying that one is the other.

      "It was the wrathful approach of the United States of America" - they are comparing the approach of the rescue column to a wrath.

      "Its truth had branded him" - this is comparing the way a Ranger felt about dying to marking him forever.

      "Darker than four inches up a goats butt"- this is used to show the reader it is very dark.

Understatement is used to express an idea in a less important why than it really is.

      " two very large forces"- this idea is expressed in this form for the reader to imagine the size of the force.

      "Our guy is fading fast"- this phrase was used to keep the radio net sounding calm when this man is about ready to die.

      "He’s hurt real bad, Doc" - the Ranger used this wording to portray calmness even critical situations.
