From May through September, major and flooding occurred across North Dakota, South Dakota, Nebraska, Kansas, Minnesota, Iowa, Missouri, Wisconsin, and Illinois. Fifty people were killed due to the flooding, and damages approached $15 billion. Transportation was mainly impacted. Barge traffic on the Missouri and Mississippi Rivers had to be stopped for nearly 2 months. Bridges were out or not accessible on the Mississippi River from Davenport, Iowa, down to St. Louis, Missouri. On the Missouri River, bridges were out from Kansas City, down to St. Charles, Missouri. Numerous interstate highways and other roads were closed. Ten commercial airports were flooded. All railroad traffic in the Midwest was also halted due to this horrifying flood.
Also at this time the first World Trade Center bombing occurred. Terrorists detonated the bomb in underground car parking lot and ordered it to be set off. Dale Earnhardt won the 1993 NASCAR Winston Cup championship. The Yankees won the World Series and also for many years after. In the NFL, the Dallas Cowboys beat the Buffalo Bills to win the Super Bowl. The score was 52-17 and the game was held in
Pasadena, CA. So the world and especially the United States was a pretty exciting place in 1993.
