reading and signing by Korean American Author, Marie G. Lee Evening
Program: Viewing of movie "True" a story about the lives of two unique
Americans and their search for the truth about their identity. Bobby was
adopted as an infant and raised in a Caucasian family. Amy is the eldest
daughter of a Korean American family. This will be followed by discussions
with creator Jay Koh, adult adoptee actor, Jessie Wine, adult adoptee
social worker, Barbara Kim, Korean American second generation attorney,
Mark Keam. Book

American City: Building Community in Los Angeles and Beyond.". 10:00-

8:00-12:00AM High School & College Students: The movie, "True" will be presented by filmaker, Jay Koh, adult Korean adoptee actor, Jessie Wine, Barbara Kim, & Mark Keam.
8:00-5:15PM Kids Interactive Program: Some examples of activities include
brush painting with professional artist, Soyoo Park, samulnori (traditional
Korean percussion) with Harry Lee, and creative writing with Korean
American children's author, Marie Lee.
ADULT PROGRAMS
9:15-10:30AM Adult Adoptee & Adoptive Parent Panel Discussion:
adoptive parent and Executive Director of NACAC, Joe Kroll and daughter
Mei Lin along with adoptive mother Patricia Palmer and son John frankly
discuss a full array of challenges, issues and joys of transracial adoption.
10:45-12:30PM Justice for All: a panel discussion on racism directed
against Korean Americans with Korean American history presented by Dr.
Edward Taehan Chang of the University of California. Dr. Luke Kim
and Grace Kim, pioneers in the struggle, will share their experiences involving
the landmark discrimination
case of Chul So Lee. Senator Paull Shin will give an overview on the
legislative perspective and the options open to us all to join in this
ongoing struggle.
12:45-2:15PM Keynote Luncheon: Keynote speaker, Phoebe Eng, author of Warrior Lessons "an Asian American women's passage into a meaningful sense of power." Special recognition of KW Lee, "the dean of Asian American journalism", known for his investigative reporting in support of Asian American rights.
2:30-3:45PM The Evan B. Donaldson Adoption Institute: Joy Lieberthal, MSW will present data provided by adult Korean adoptees from the Gathering, a meeting of 400 Korean born adult adoptees last September in Washington D.C. Korean Customs: Laurel Kendall, cultural anthropologist and Korea expert with the American Museum of Natural History, author of Getting Married in Korea and other books will speak on Korean social customs and culture related to adoption, and thehistorical background of these customs, based on field work she has done. There will be time for questions.
4:00-5:15PM Race & Cultural Identity: Dr. Amanda Baden, St.
Johns University, Dennis Bisgaard, The Collegiate School, present identity
issues around transracial Adoption with an additional special focus
on biracial identity needs.
5:30-6:30PM Book Signing: With Phoebe Eng, author of Warrior Lessons
6:30-8:30PM Dinner: Adult Korean Born Adoptee, Susan Spafford,
accomplished violin soloist and Miss Pennsylvania, will speak and
perform
during the dinner hour. Harry Lee and The Hanulsori Kids will
perform "The Night Thunder Danced" from their award-winning Seoul
Drum Festival presentation. Skit performance by Camp Sejong alumni.
9:00- 11:00PM Adult Korean Adoptee Showcase: directed by Natalie Lemoine Mihee Choi
SUNDAY
8:00-12:00PM Kids Interactive Program
8:00-9:45AM Fragile Open with Care-opening the closed Korean adoption,
Dr. Joyce Maguire Pavao, author of The Family of Adoption will present
a discussion with Marie Niarhos and Kathy Beck about opening their children's
adoptions, issues that have arisen and how they deal with them. Dr. Pavao
will also discuss the
history of closed adoption and what its impact has been on our children.
How to Adopt From Korea: Advice from major adoption
agencies
10:00-11:45AM Sibling Relationships: Jane Brown, MSW will explore the issues for siblings in adoptive families. Issues to cover: bio & adopted kids, kids adopted from different countries, open & closed adoptions within families (impact on children), extended family issues (i.e. racism, favoritism, Grandma puts one child in her will but not the "adopted" child), siblings with handicapping conditions, dealing with societal expectations and public attention, and adopting out of birth order. Korean Agency Updates: the latest update on policy after placement and search resources available.

LOCATION AND HOTEL ACCOMODATIONS
The conference will be held at the Hilton Hasbrouck Heights Hotel,
650 Terrace Ave., Hasbrouck Heights, New Jersey, 076704. Free Parking
is available. A block of hotel rooms are being held by the
hotel at the conference rate of $94 per single and double occupancy.
