Alaska's Women Pilots: Contemporary Portrait

by Jenifer Fratzke is an engaging book filled with aviation history and personal accounts of extraordinarily courageous and tenacious women, who pilot a variety of aircraft including Piper Cubs, Twin Otters, and helicopters. In between stories of how these nine women came to make a life in Alaska aviation are snippets of aviation history, autobiographical glimpses, philosophical prose, and words of encouragement to other women trying to 'find their path' both in and out of aviation.

Flying Down to Kabul: A DVD

Flying Down to Kabul An inspirational aviation and cultural documentary you’ll want to view more than once and share with friends.  It’s a true story that you will continue to contemplate about life and its meanings after watching it.  What inspires people to help strangers?  What can we, as pilots and individuals, do to insure that the freedom of general aviation isn’t lost after 911?  How can and do we break free of our self imposed personal, political and cultural parameters?

This documentary takes you on the incredible breath holding 3700 mile white knuckle flight to Kabul.  You are breathless at high altitudes skimming jagged mountain peaks, short on fuel, no places for emergency landings, and interacting in airspace with people that are as likely to shoot you as minimally cooperate with you the way to your destination.

By the end of this documentary you’ll also be able to distinguish a fashionable burka from a matronly one should you be inspired to fly to Kabul and have to don one yourself!  As this 78 minute DVD first revs up there are subtitles and some hokey animation depicting the flight of the soul that you’ll understand better after watching the whole story; maybe it’s a European filming technique?  The filming then “takes off” engrossing you and is primarily in English.
