It's the Way You Make Me Feel

Mark: I can’t believe that Nicky is married now!

Melissa: What’s wrong? Are you worried that you’re going to be next?

Mark: No way! I’m not planning on getting married.

Melissa: Well I don’t think you need to worry about it. Who would want to marry you anyway?

Mark: Very funny.

Melissa and Mark were presently at the wedding reception of their friend Nicky who had just married his longtime girlfriend Georgina. As they watch the happy couple out on the dance floor, Melissa continues to tease Mark.

Melissa: I’m sorry, I’m just kidding. But I’m telling you, you can say you don’t want to get married all you want, but I know that you’re a romantic at heart. You just haven’t found the right girl yet.

Mark: Oh I don’t know about that.

Although he tries to hide it, Melissa notices the way his eyes move down their table. Melissa follows his gaze to where her friend Lissa is sitting with her boyfriend Bryan. It doesn’t take a genius to figure out what’s going on.

Melissa: You’re in love with Lissa!

Mark: Shhh! Keep it down! They’ll hear you!

Melissa: I can’t believe that you like Lissa! She’s dating one of your best friends!

Mark: So? You like Bryan.

Melissa: What?! Of course I don’t. I’d never…

Mark: Don’t lie to me Melissa.

Melissa: I’m not. I…

Mark: Tell me that it doesn’t kill you to see the two of them together.

Melissa: I… You’re right.

Melissa finally gives in. Of all people, Mark would be the one to understand her feelings.

Melissa: You’re right, I do like Bryan. I can’t help it, there’s just something about him. The way he makes me feel… I know it’s wrong, he’s with Lissa and she’s my friend. But…

Mark: Your heart just can’t hold back. I know exactly how you feel.

Melissa: Well we’re quite the pathetic ones, aren’t we? Not only are we the only ones of our friends that don’t have someone, but we’re in love with people that we can never be with.

They both look around their table at their other friends. There was Jill and Shane, Andrea and Kian, and of course Lissa and Bryan, not to mention Nicky and Georgina who had just a few short hours ago made a lifetime commitment to each other. They were the only lonely ones of the group. They sit in silence as they think about their lives, and what could never be. Their unhappiness is noticed by all their friends, especially Lissa and Bryan who make their way over to them.

Lissa: Are you guys okay?

Melissa: We’re fine.

Lissa: You don’t look fine.

Bryan: Yeah, cheer up. This is supposed to be a happy day!

Both Melissa and Mark fake smiles but Lissa and Bryan can tell that their hearts aren’t in it. Lissa and Bryan watch Jill and Shane, and Andrea and Kian get up to dance, and they both get an idea. They look at each other and see that they are in agreement.

Bryan: Melissa, would you like to dance?

Melissa: What?

Bryan: Would you like to dance with me? You do know what that is right? I know you don’t do it very often, but I’m sure you’ll pick it up rather quickly.

Melissa: You’re so funny Bryan.

Bryan: I know. So, how about it?

Melissa turns to Mark for help, knowing that as much as she wants to dance with Bryan, it would not be a good idea. But Mark has problems of his own. Lissa has pulled him out of his seat and is dragging him towards the dance floor. Mark could have stopped her if he’d tried, but he just couldn’t say no to the chance to hold her in his arms.

Bryan: Now who’s going to save you?

Before Melissa can answer he has taken her hand and followed his girlfriend out onto the floor. Bryan puts his arms around Melissa, while nearby Mark does the same to Lissa. Melissa and Mark exchange a look of both pleasure and pain before they devote all their attention to the one that they love.

It's the things that you do
So physical
It's the things that you say
So flammable
You know I can't resist
Boy it's such a shame
You belong to another
I don't wanna hurt nobody
But my heart just can't hold back

It's the way you make me feel
(The way that you make me feel)
Spinning my world around
Tell me how can I walk away
I don't care what they say
I'm loving you anyway
It's the way you make me feel

Lissa lifts her head from Mark’s shoulder and looks up at him.

Lissa: Are you okay now? You looked so sad before.

Mark: I’m fine, it was nothing, really.

Lissa: Mark you can tell me anything. You know that right?

Mark: Yeah.

Lissa: So what is it?

Mark looks down into her eyes and knows that he can’t deny her anything.

Mark: There’s this girl…

Lissa: And you like her?

Mark: I’m completely in love with her. But she belongs to another.

Someone immediately comes to Lissa’s mind that would explain Mark’s sorrow.

Lissa: It’s not Georgina, is it?

Mark: No, of course not. I mean I do love Georgina, but as a sister. No it’s not her, but she’s just as unattainable.

Lissa: Who is she? Do I know her?

Mark: I can’t tell you that. It’s not important anyway. I have no chance with her.

Lissa: I’m so sorry Mark. Is there anything I can do for you?

Mark: Just keep smiling at me like that. It somehow makes things seem not as bad.

Lissa smiles at him as he asked as she lays her head on his shoulder again.

I'm going to make you mine
It's not impossible
Got to let you know
I'm irresistible
Baby can't you see
You're the one for me
But you belong to another
I don't wanna hurt nobody
But my heart just can't hold back

It's the way you make me feel
(The way that you make me feel)
Spinning my world around
Tell me how can I walk away
I don't care what they say
I'm loving you anyway
It's the way you make me feel

Make me feel, make me feel
Make me feel, make me feel

Meanwhile, a few feet away, Bryan looks down at Melissa and notices that she is now smiling.

Bryan: See I knew this would cheer you up.

Melissa: Yeah it did. Thanks Bryan.

Bryan: No problem. So are you going to tell me what was bothering you or am I going to have to tickle it out of you?

Melissa: Bryan don’t, I…

Bryan: Are you going to tell me?

Melissa: No.

Bryan: Then I have no choice.

He moves his hands down to her waist but before he can do anything, Melissa grabs his hands and looks at him seriously.

Melissa: Bryan please. I don’t want to talk about it.

Bryan is instantly apologetic.

Bryan: I’m sorry Melissa. I didn’t mean to upset you. Are we still friends?

Melissa: Of course.

Bryan starts to wrap his arms around her again but Melissa slides out of his reach.

Melissa: I can’t, I’m sorry, I…

She runs over to Mark and Lissa and grabs Mark’s arm.

Melissa: Can I cut in?

Mark: Melissa…

Melissa: Please?

Mark senses her distress and agrees. Lissa leaves to join Bryan as Mark stares down at Melissa who has turned her head in the opposite direction of the happy couple.

Mark: What happened?

Melissa: I can’t do it, I can’t spend time with him and act like everything’s okay. Every time he looks into my eyes I worry that he can see the truth.

Mark: I know what you mean.

Melissa: What are we going to do? I can’t go on like this.

Mark: I don’t know, but we’ll get through it together.

He tightens his hold on her and she does the same, each drawing comfort from the other, knowing that no matter what happens with Lissa and Bryan, they’ll still have each other.

When I look into your eyes
Everytime you smile at me
Oh I go weak inside
Baby I just can't hide my love

It's the way you make me feel
(The way that you make me feel)
Spinning my world around
Tell me how can I walk away
I don't care what they say
I'm loving you anyway
Anyway

It's the way you make me feel
Make me feel, make me feel
Make me feel, make me feel
Tell me how can I walk away
I don't care what they say
I'm loving you anyway

It's the way you make me feel
