Frances the Blue Duck

Once upon a time there was a little blue duck named Frances. Frances was the only blue duck in the world and all of the other ducks laughed at him because he was different. This made Frances very sad so one day Frances decided that he wasn’t going to take it anymore and he grabbed a pail of yellow paint and painted himself yellow so that he would match all of the other ducks in the pond. He covered his head and his neck, his stomach, all the way down to his feet. Frances looked in the mirror and didn’t even recognize his reflection staring back at him. Frances smiled and though “Now I’m just like all of the others and everybody will like me”.

Frances walked out of his house and towards the duck pond to see all of the other ducks. When he got to the pond he stood at the edge and waited for one of the other ducks to invite him over to play. Frances waited and waited and waited but still no one invited him to play with them. Frances was watching all of the other ducks swimming and laughing and he wanted to join. "If nobody will play with me I’ll have fun by myself." Frances thought. So Frances jumped in the water and made a huge splash.

When Frances surfaced he noticed that the pond had turned yellow and that all the other ducks were pointing at him and laughing. “Look at how stupid Frances is” one of the little ducks said. “He tried to use paint to be like us … What a loser” Frances slowly began to realize that the paint that he used this morning to paint himself yellow had come off when he had jumped into the water and rinsed away. Frances jumped out of the water and ran home crying.

When he got home Frances cried “I’m never leaving this house again” and walked into his room slamming the door. Frances’ father came into the room to see what was the matter and noticed Frances crying. “Son what’s wrong?” he asked his son. “They make fun of me … Everyone makes fun of me” Frances cried. “I’m not leaving the house again”. Frances' father looked at his son. “Come here my son … Let me tell you something” Frances’ father told him. Frances came over and sat on his father’s lap. “Let me tell you how you can get those other boys to stop making fun of you” Frances’ father leaned down and whispered into his son’s ear. Frances listened to every word that his father told him and when he was finished he looked at his father in amazement. “Do you really think that will work?” Frances asked. “I know that it will my son … Just don’t tell you mother that I told you” Frances agreed and ran out the door to do what his father had told him to do.

Frances ran as fast as he could back to the pond where the other ducks were swimming and playing with each other. Vincent one of the bigger ducks who was always picking on Frances was the first to see Frances come back to the pond. “What’s the matter blue butt … Didn’t get enough the first time” Vincent said. Frances looked at Vincent and said “Why don’t you come over here and say that?” Vincent climbed out of the pond and walked over to Frances. “You’d better watch it little one … You don’t want to mess with me.” Frances didn’t back down he just looked at Vincent and smiled.

Frances had a plan he wasn’t going to make the first move so he just stood in front of Vincent and laughed. Vincent was the first to swing and Frances ducked out of the way. “Is that all you got?” Frances asked and Vincent took another swing at him and Frances moved again. Frances could tell that Vincent was getting tired so he made his move. Frances took a few steps towards Vincent and shoved him right into the pond. There was a huge splash and Vincent was soaking wet. All of the other ducks began to laugh at Vincent. Vincent looked up at Frances the blue duck and tried to get out of the pond and go after him but everytime he was getting up he would fall back down again. Finally Vincent got out of the pond but instead of going after Frances he ran home crying. All of the other ducks laughed as Vincent ran away but Frances. He ran after Vincent.

Frances caught up to Vincent a few feet away from his house. “What do you want?” Vincent asked. “I’m sorry for what I did … but it was the only way that I could show you what it’s like to be me and have everyone laugh at you and call you names” Frances replied. Vincent looked at Frances the blue duck and said “Look I’m sorry for making fun of you and I’m sorry if I hurt your feelings … I didn’t realize” Frances being the kind of duck that he is accepted Vincent’s apology and invited him over to play at his house. And from that day on Vincent and Frances the blue duck were life long friends and no one ever made fun of Frances again.

So the moral of this story is don’t make fun of someone because he’s different because he just might kick your ass one day!
