Aftermath
By Aislinn Graves
“Shema Yisra'el Adonai Eloheinu Adonai ehad! Wait for me, Chief.”
That was all Jim Ellison said before they took Blair Sandburg’s body away. Simon watched helplessly as the big detective rose to his feet, eyes blank. Jim turned to Simon. “Did they get the bastard?”
“Yeah Jim, they got him. Rafe took him out.” Simon waved to were the paramedics where placing another body in the ambulance for a trip to the morgue. “Jim…” he paused fighting back tears. “I’m so sorry.”
Jim just stared at the ambulance that held his dearest friend. He flinched as Simon laid his hand on his arm.
“Let’s go. I’m taking you home.” Simon said. He steered Jim towards his car.
*************
‘No excuses. I should have known. I never should have left him alone.
I should have taken his gun.’ Simon lowed his head and wept.
Megan Conner wrapped her arms around him , tears running down her face. “Maybe it’s better this way sir.” She whispered. “Neither of them would have wanted to go on alone.”
They stood together beside the grave site and watched as twin coffins were lowered down together. Finally the service was over, the mourners had left and still Simon and Megan stood beside the grave of the finest team the Cascade Police Department had ever had.
“I should have known Megan. They were my responsibility and I should have know Jim would do something like this.”
“Simon, stop it! Do you really think Jim could have gone on without Blair? I know that this doesn’t make it any easier but they’re together, and that’s all either of them would ever have wanted.” Megan took Simon’s face in her soft hands and stared into his eyes.
“But they were my friends and now… I’m alone.” Simon couldn’t hold back the tears.
“No sir. You’re not.” A deep voice said from behind them. “We’re here for you.”
Simon turned to find the rest of his team standing there. The remaining detectives of the Major Crimes department clustered around him, each reaching out to him. And healing began.
***********
Jungle surrounded him and in the distance he heard a familiar heartbeat.
Jim ran toward it, pushing though the underbrush until he came to a clearing.
“What took you so long man?” Blair grinned looking up at his friend. He raised his right hand, palm facing Jim.
Jim lifted his left hand to press against Blair's. “Got here as quick as I could. Glad you waited for me Chief.”
The two, Sentinel and Guide, partners, brothers, soul mates, turned as one and walked into the light… together.
The end.
