Maurice Gibb was in important part of many lives, including mine.

Meet the Bee Gees... brothers Barry, Robin, Maurice and Andy Gibb.
Andy passed away a few decades ago from a drug overdose - the youngest member of the band.

To all you Hanson fans, the Bee Gees losing Maurice is like Hanson losing Zac. You may not believe me, but if you truly took the time to look at the Bee Gees you would see a lot of similarites.

Maurice was my favourite of the brothers, and my all-time favourite Bee Gees song was sung by him (Closer Than Close). Maurice constantly entertained his audiences by not only great talent by voice and musical instruments, but by his antics onstage and his witty sense of humor.
(For anyone who saw the Stadium Australia concert for 'One Night Only'... you know what kind of antics I'm talking about! Who could forget when he flashed the entire audience, then pretended his fly was undone and tried to tell Robin who was completely ignoring him? hehe).

And who could go past that smile? It's almost heavenly... and it takes alot for me to admit that.

The Gibb Brothers were halfway through recording their latest studio album on Thursday the 9th of Januray, 2003, when Maurice suddenly collapsed during recording. He was rushed to a Miami hospital, where it was discovered an intestine was twisted (he'd had the problem from birth).

They were to operate quickly. After the operation (and alot of news coverage) Robin spoke out that his organs were all 'A1' and he would be making a full recovery. He had opened his eyes, and squeezed his daughter's hand.

On Saturday the 12th of Januray, 2003, Maurice suffered a cardiac arrest.
This killed him.

I was online at the time. I checked the latest Yahoo! report on his progress, and had believed what Robin believed. Just seconds later, my mother called out 'He's dead!'. I asked who, and she said Maurice. I couldn't believe it. But I saw it on the news that night.

I am yet to cry. Now I'm not sure that I will.

Barry and Robin mourned for a few days. A news report followed on the Tuesday after featuring the two. Barry explained that he believed the proper protocol had not been followed, leading up to his brother's death. They were looking into legal action.
The hospital had already appointed a lawyer. A bit quick, huh?

The funeral was on Wednesday. Robin arrived with his wife, and a very distraught Barry arrived with Michael Jackson approximately half an hour late - he hadn't planned to show, being too emotional. No music was played at the funeral.

It was the week after that Barry and Robin vowed never to perform under the name of 'Bee Gees' again, though they would continue performing.

R.I.P. Maurice Gibb.
My favourite Bee Gee.
