When Esperanza says"But I know how these things go"she shows how hopeless she feels about getting a new house in a better neighborhood.Esperanza thinks they will never be able to get the house of her dreams.

When Esperanza says:"Pleople like us"(p.13)She refersto the spanish minority. She feels that even some middle class people don't like minorities.

In the chapter titled "Darie & the clouds",Esperanza says:"we take what we can get and make the best out of it".With these words she explains how poor people have to be happy with whatever they have. This part of the book shows how Esperanza realizes that she is not living in the appropriate environment but she tries to live with it.

When Esperanza says "ain't it a shame"(p.68)she refers to the fact that Geraldo died without no one knowing who he was or where he came from. This shows how important it is for Esperanza to be somebody.

On page 85 Esperanza tells us about a women who's always fiughting with her husband and she uses the expression "Same story" to tell us how they always fight and then make up.
