Act 1 The theme of Act 1 is as simple as it sounds, refusal. In this act you have many people refusing things. Caesar is being offered the crown, three times in fact, and refuses it all three times because of the simple fact that he doesnt think that he is worthy enough of such an honor. Also as this is happening Cassius is trying to convince Brutus that he is should be King because he is such an honorable man and many think that he is worthy and Caesar is not. Still Brutus refuses to think that he is an honorable enough man to have the honor of being something as great as a King. Refusal is the main idea in these three scenes even though others things have been brought into play like maybe some people being confused on who to believe is worthy, and then others who are two-faced and are going both ways. The main fact though is that Brutus refuses to believe that he is ready, or even ever going to be considered as honorable, and also Caesar refuses the crown. I tend to believe thought that Caesar is refuses the crown as a way to know what he reactions of the people will be, and he realizes that some do agree with him being King and others do not think that he should be. He ends up falling into a faint because of his illness and also I think it was because he was confused by the way some of the people were booing him, and cheering that he was refusing the crown. Brutus is a great man and does deserve a lot of credit but I believe that Cassius and others are trying to convince him that he is more then that just so Caesar doesnt get crowned. I think that they may just be using him instead of themselves, because if Brutus accepts that he is worthy to be King, more the Caesar, it is like he is saying, Accept me because I am better then Caesar, and much more worthy of this honor.Even though I think that in reality he is being used because he is well known, as Cassius isnt so well known, but I think he should be because he is a deceitful man and has a lot to do with what is going on with Brutus' mind. Being such a good-hearted man as Brutus, he is venerable in the way that when he refuses to believe he should accept himself as worthy, shows a lot of character. Some, like Caesar, will put on a show as if they didn't really want to crown and will refuse it so that the people will want him even more, because we all know that somewhere down the road he will accept the honor as King, but he just likes to put on a show of what some of these people may think. Refusing something as great as being King, or being thought of being worthy enough of King, is a huge thing. It is a great honor and accomplishment to be known as great as King. King Brutus or All hail Caesar, the King. Has a nice ring to it right? Well when both of these men refuse to believe that this is being offered it shows both character and being naive at the same time. People, or peasants, in this case are also refusing things. Some of them are refusing Caesar. They booed at him but some of them cheered that he refuses it. So they are refusing Caesar, they are refusing to accept him as the King, when they think someone else is more worthy. I'm not even sure why some of these people don't think he is worthy but they do and I will just go along with it, but them refusing him was a huge deal. Refusal is a common thing, even if you don't realize it, you refuse things everyday and sometimes when you refuse the wrong thing, it will cause confusion, and chaos. |
