Act 1 Scene 1 Summarizing this act is somewhat challenging because it is mainly the introduction of the play. When we first enter the act, you meet Flavius, Marullus, and some commoners. Marullus and Flavius are talking to these commoners and asking them the kind of jobs they do, they are talking down to them and being short which is rude in many ways. The first commoner is a carpenter and the second tells them that they would know him as a cobbler. He mends soles he says. The two men then ask these commoners why they are out and they tell him that they are waiting for Caesar. Marullus and Flavius tell them to go inside and stay in there then talk amongst themselves. They decide to go and strip the statues of Caesar, the ones that the town had decorated but end up paying for it in the end. They show a true sign of what is going to happen in the story to come and make you understand that there will be twists and turns. Act 1 Scene 2 Games are happening and Brutus and Cassius decide that they do not want to watch them. Well actually Brutus does not want to but Cassius decides to stay with him, and talk. They talk about how Cassius thinks Brutus is worthy enough of being King. Brutus does not believe so, but then they hear great shouts, which later they come to find out that all the shouts come from the crowd of people. They are shouting because Antony presents the crown, or somewhat of a crown to Caesar three times and he refuses it all three times. Antony tells him that Caesar does not think he is worthy enough to receive the crown. Casca tells Cassius that Caesar fainted because of his illness. It looked as if he was foaming at the mouth like a dog. It wasn’t a pretty site. They all exit and Cassius says to himself that he will let the world see how worthy Brutus is. Act 1 Scene 3 Cassius is talking with Casca about how horrible the night is and what could have caused all of these things to happen. Some may think it is because of Caesar and him being offered the crown when he shouldn’t have been, others just think it is the crazy weather and don’t think much more of it. Cassius asks Cinna to take letters to Brutus’s window and throw in the letters, without being seen. The letters are written in all different handwritings but they are writing them to make Brutus think that all kinds of people want him to be in control. Some do want Brutus to be in control because they think he is worthy in some cases but others just “go with the flow you could say and just think Caesar is worthy. Anyways, Casca and Cinna do things for Cassius because they agree with him and think Caesar will cause chaos and Brutus will make things much better. |
