I found out I was pregnant at 4-5 weeks along. I had a blood test done at my family Dr. to confirm my pregnancy and as I was leaving the Dr's. Wife said to me "wouldn't it be funny if there were two in there?"
I laughed and said "NO" thinking no more of it. Shortly after sending the good news to my relatives, I received two silver picture frames from my Grandmother with a note saying "Just incase you have Twins"
When I called her to thank her, I asked her if there was anything she knew that I didn't and should, and if so she better tell me now. She laughed and said "No, No, you don't want to have twins do you?" I replied with a no thanks and that one would be enough!. Well as if two predictions wern't enough.....a week later I was visiting with my best friends mother, when her brother asked me how I was feeling, I told him I was okay just the morning sickness was doing a number on me. Tom asked me if there were twins in my family, and I said ":no", and Tom said "You're going to have twins I bet you" I said "Yea right" and Tom said "well Alex, never say never" I didn't think anything of it, and carried on. The following weekend a friend of ours said to us 'You're going to have twins, and I bet you they will both be girls" Again I just took it all as a joke, after all I had the heartbeat listened to already and they said the second one was mine, so there was no possibility of there being a second baby in there........until.....one day I was getting "pulling pains" on both sides of my stomach which kinda took my breath away. I thought nothing of it, but called the Dr. anyway just as a precaution. The Dr. ordered an ultrasound right away, which the Technician began to reveal as Twins, by saying ":you see those two little round things"? in a split second thoughts start racing through my head such as: oh no, two headed baby, or maybe that means it's a boy, then came "those are two heads" I said "y you m mean TWINS?" "yes she said, you're having identical twins" I was in complete shock, all I could do was laugh hysterically and say "oh my god, my grandmother predicited this" (along with a few others) I went home reciting the "double mint gum commercials" then called my father to give him the news.
When I finally spoke to my Grandmother I asked her if she had cast some kind of spell on me and she just laughed.
The next few months was spent preparing for twins, and my belly grew bigger and bigger, at 7 months I had developed Preeclampsia and Toxemia, and on January 7th, 1993 the Dr. performed an emergency C-Section.
Emma was born first at 12:17pm and Maria was born second at 12:18pm. They were two and a half pounds each and looked like tiny Amazon Monkeys (I felt guilty for thinking this for almost two years) squealing with clenched fists. I knew at that moment that they were going to be alright. The next week was tough, I had to leave the hospital without my babies, visit and go home without them every day. It was very scarey and I prayed to God every day that they would be okay and all the machines and blood tests would make it worthwhile....seven weeks later it did, Emma came home from the hospital first weighing 4 1/2 lbs. Maria hadn't learned to suck, swallow, and breath while feeding, so she had to stay behind a week. Shortly after Emma came home Maria turned the corner and got her act together, she somehow knew that if she wanted to come home with her sister she had to get it down. One week later Maria came home, and thus began the wonderful joyeous life with twins in tow!! Not for a moment have I ever complained about having twins, nor have I fed into any comments suggesting I should be pitied having twins, and twice the work. For me it has been an absolute joy from day one!
I am truly twice blessed, and having twins is twice as nice, twice the fun and twice the joy!
