Chimney Repair and Rebuilding

All Concrete repair problems are different in nature.
Each condition requires a clear understanding of what is expected of the repair
which includes, appearance, and protection needs. An effective repair strategy must
draw from a variety of repair materials, each having an installation technique that
best suits both the material and the strategy.

Absolute Chimney utilizes the latest technologies to restore your chimney to full working
order and appearance. Critical to successful concrete repair is the proper surface preparation
of the area being repaired. Combined, these techniques ensure maximum bond between the new
repair material and the existing substrate, resulting in effective, long-lasting repair, making
sure that a properly functioning chimney has enough draft to pull smoke out of your home and provide
enough oxygen for hot, complete burning of wood to occur. It is important that your chimney is the right
type and style for your firebox or stove. Absolute Chimney will install this properly in your home in
compliance with building codes and manufacturer instructions.

The purpose of your chimney is two-fold. It must remove harmful byproducts created when fuel is burned, and
it must carry excessive heat away from combustible items near the fire. Besides being cleaned and inspected each year,
your chimney will also need occasional repairs to ensure that it is performing these functions properly.
The most common repairs are re-pointing, mortar crown repair, flue and damper repair.

The main characteristics of the rebuilding of a chimney are:

Rebuilding the Chimney from the roofline up.
Some chimneys have bricks or stone that are cracked above the roofline.
These bricks are deteriorated and will need to be replaced.
Absolute Chimney removes the chimney above the roofline and rebuilds the chimney using
new brick. The brick will match as close as possible in color and texture and
All rebuilds include replacing the existing flue tile if they are damaged from the rebuild point upward.
All Rebuilds will also include a new sloping concrete crown to allow for proper water drainage. We will
reinstall and seal existing flashing. Absolute Chimney will clean up and remove all chimney debris.
Absolute Chimney also recommends that all rebuilds be waterproofed.

Rebuilding the Chimney from the ground up:
Some chimneys that have deteriorated bricks from the base all the way to the top
of the chimney and these bricks usually have extensive water damage and are not able
to be repaired.
Absolute Chimney will tear the chimney down to the ground and rebuild it to the original height
using new brick. Absolute Chimney will install new flue tiles from the smoke chamber to the top of the chimney.
We install new sloping concrete crown to allow for proper water drainage. We also install
new counter flashing, and clean up and remove all debris.
We also recommended that all rebuilds be waterproofed. The crown of your chimney typically comprised of concrete or cement is the top or lid
of your chimney. The function of your crown is to be your chimney's first line of defense
against water damage. Unfortunately, masonry crowns do not expand and contract with
temperature changes and naturally crack or fracture. Cracks in the crown allow water
to penetrate through the crown into the underlying brick and mortar joints.
With freeze thaw cycles the water can damage the bricks and mortar joints and lead to costly repairs.

Absolute Chimney can repair or replace the concrete crown if needed. Sometimes the crown has
been neglected and simply needs replaced where other times it can be repaired. When installing a new concrete crown.
Absolute Chimney will remove the existing concrete being careful not to damage the underlying bricks and will install a new crown.
The new crown will have a slight slope so water does not sit on top of the crown, but the water simply drains off.
If the cracks are minor and the majority of the crown is in good condition, then we use a sealer to go over the existing concrete crown.
This sealer is a permanent, waterproof membrane that maintains its flexible properties and doesn’t crack.
Once applied it repels water immediately and flexes with the crown as the chimney expands and contracts with temperature changes.

Let Absolute Chimney take care of all your chimney needs, and you will have piece of mind that this winter you will be warm and comfortable.
