ABC's of the Internet

 emoticons

Sometimes you really want to show someone how you feel when you're writing them an email or chat message… if only they could see your face! Emoticons are different symbols you can type on your computer that can tell your friends that you 're happy, sad, or even crying! Some examples are smileys :) and frowns :( , ;) winks, 8-) sunglasses, and |-o yawns.

On the Internet in e-mail, chatting, and text messaging, an emoticon (sometimes referred to by the name of the original emoticon, the smiley) is a short sequence of keyboard letters and symbols, usually emulating a facial expression, expressing a feeling that supplements the message. Mike Jones, who works in the systems and networking research group at Microsoft's headquarters in Redmond, Washington, has determined that the first smiley was posted on September 19, 1982.
