Nicole's Activities:

9/08/98, Tuesday - Fastening a Seatbelt
For the last week or more Nicole has been fastening her own seatbelt in the Minivan. Since she sits high on a booster seat, it's harder to reach the receiving end of the buckle, but she does it really well. It's nice to be able to let her jump in and do it herself.

9/01/98, Tuesday - Jumping Rope
Nicole is really coming along physically. She has really been learning a lot in her gymnastics class and goes to an "exercise" class at the Q (health club) sometimes. We bought a longer rope this weekend and Tina tied one end to a table and was swinging the rope for Nicole to jump. Nicole was doing quite well, jumping six times or more before missing. She has wanted to jump rope for a long time, but became discouraged quite often when she couldn't do it.

8/29/98, Saturday - Funny Bike Story, Praying
I love summer because Nicole's asthma doesn't bother her and everyone is generally more healthy. Even though it still got over 100 degrees today, I took Nicole out on her bike. She's been begging to go for a while now. It's just been so hot. We went around the block quickly ducking into the shade wherever available. Occasionally Nicole would stop to drink from the cup we brought along. I would complain when she stopped in the sun and asked her to try to stop in the shade. As we neared home, she stopped out in the full sunlight and I began to complain. She said "But Daddy, I stopped in my shadow. Look!" Sure enough. There it was. Her shadow.

Nicole and Christopher started school this last week. They both love it. Nicole had a hard time waiting for that first day. They are still going two days a week for about three hours in the morning.

Nicole has a very tender heart. She hates to see anyone getting hurt or mistreated. We were watching a show where we were supposed to laugh and the fall-down type antics of the characters, but she just cringed. She also has a very tender heart for her parents. A couple weeks ago, she started giving me extra big hugs at night and telling me to store her hugs and kisses in my heart to have at work. She cheers when I announce "tomorrow's Saturday. I don't go to work".

Nicole is in the age of "Why". She asks about everything now. Some people may find it annoying, but I really kind of like answering her questions.

I think I've found out why we're supposed to kneel when we pray. We used to let Nicole lay down and pray, but she'd be so squirmy and wouldn't pray very well or pay attention. I started having her kneel down, and now she prays very nicely without fidgeting. Christopher also folds his hands when we say grace at the table. He then adds a loud "Amen" after the prayer.

8/21/98, Monday
Nicole, just this week, started putting on her own seat belt. She still sits in a booster seat, so she's elevated quite a bit. The seat belt is really quite a feat. It would actually be easier without the booster seat because she'd be closer to the latch.

8/17/98, Monday
Nicole said something very sweet to me this weekend. I was giving her a hug after coming home from somewhere. She looked up at me and said "Whenever you look at me, Daddy, you smile." I'm glad she notices. Because she really does make me very happy.}

8/13/98, Thursday - Gymnastics, Magic Show
Nicole is in a new gymnastics class and has learned to do a French summersault. She does the splits, puts her hands down on the floor, tucks her head and rolls with her legs sticking out to the side. Pretty cool.

Last night I took Nicole to a magic show hosted by the Jaycees. We had a really good time. Nicole was pretty apprehensive (like at the Circus), but I kept telling her that they would just be tricks and that nothing was real. It was just for fun. She ended up really enjoying the show. Her favorite routine was when he put his assistant through a machine that made her flat, put her in a Fed Ex box and sent her to Hawaii. A while later another box arrived from Hawaii that was empty when he pulled the wrapping off, but when he yanked off the top of the crate, the assistant magically appeared out of thin air and was wearing a lay (sp?) of flowers from Hawaii. It was fun for the kids. I could figure out about half of the tricks, but I didn't tell Nicole of course.

8/04/98, Tuesday - Summer Reading
Nicole has finished her summer reading program at the library. In two months she read (we read to her) 220 books. I'll have to put her certificate on the web, too. It's even signed by the governor. I think the reading is really helping her vocabulary. She is using some very fancy phrases any more.

The other day I was teasing her a little. But she didn't appreciate it. I asked her "Don't you like my jokes?" She replied "Only the good ones."

7/31/98, Tuesday - A Good Big Sister
Christopher had a lot of trouble going to sleep last night. Very unusual for him. Tina was shopping, so it was just me and Nicole. I ended up getting Christopher out of bed for a little while and Nicole was so good with him. She found him his favorite ball, let him play with her new magic wand, played catch with him, suggested he run and hug Daddy and then back to hug her, and ultimately let him take her favorite kitty toy to bed with him. I'm very proud of her.

7/28/98, Tuesday - Questions About God
Nicole has started asking more questions about God. Here's a list. Please submit your answers by e-mail.

"Will God get rid of ghosts and goblins?"
"Grandma and Granddad are old. Are they going to die?"
"Am I going to die when I'm a little kid?"
After telling her that God wanted her to live so she could tell others about him, she replied: "I don't want to go to Africa and the Indians!" (I think they must have talked about missionaries in school)
"Have you seen angels come down?"

Quite a list, isn't it.

7/23/98, Thursday
Last night Nicole was very tired and became cranky and incooperative. Basically, she was a bear. Tina took Nicole to bed and after her bedtime prayer she added "Lord, help Nicole have a teachable heart. Amen." After which, Nicole added this "And help Mommy not to yell so much. Amen."

Nicole has an incredible memory. She remembers things she's seen or done years ago. I'm always amazed when she, out of the blue, will remember something we did or said. I don't think she'll ever let me live down the fact that I crashed our car last year. That's an easy one, there are other things we never would have thought she'd retain, but she does.

7/21/98, Tuesday
I watched Nicole playing a computer game last night. It was about letters. I saw her sounding out words like "Plant - Pah, Pah, 'P'". She then presses 'P' and gets the computer to say Plant like she wants.

7/17/98, Friday - More Vacation Highlights. A Special Rainbow
While we were at Grandma and Granddad's house, we all slept in a large bedroom in the basement. One night, we put Christopher down in his crib, then a little later sent Nicole to bed. Christopher hadn't quite gone to sleep. After a little while I walked by the room and noticed the Nicole was over by the crib. I watched for a little while. Nicole was talking softly to Christopher who was still lying down. When I walked in the room, Nicole got this panicked look and jumped into her own bed. She then went on to explain at length that Christopher kept popping up so she'd push his face down, but he kept getting up and she couldn't sleep. As we laughed at her explainations we moved her to a different room for the night so they both could get some sleep.

One night there was a beautiful full rainbow in the sky. I quickly got Nicole since she likes rainbows. I'll never forget her face. She was absolutely stunned by the beauty of the rainbow. Her mouth fell open and after the shock wore off she began jumping for joy. She had never really seen a rainbow before. It was quite special.

7/15/98, Wednesday - Vacation
Last week we went to the Grandparents for vacation. Nicole travelled very well and, of course, she loves stopping at all the McDonald's along the way.

While there, Nicole played the piano with Grandma. It was a cute scene. She doesn't play the right notes, but she's understanding rythm and seems to enjoy playing.
