Aquaculture

Alligators -Basic care of alligators, caiman and crocodiles in captivity. In the warmer parts of the Southeastern United States, alligator ranches attract tourists and are producers of gourmet meat and leather.

Biological Supply Business

Would you consider raising animals for schools and laboratories? Animals often requested include: invertebrates, insects, amphibians, cats, dogs, ferrets, farm animals, rabbits, monkeys and chimpanzees, birds (mostly chickens and ducks), and marine creatures. Certain plants are in demand, too.

A rural homesteader could easily raise most of these creatures with the possible exception of primates and marine organisms. I don't want to rule out anything, however. In warm parts of the U.S., small primates would not be impossible to raise. Do you live by the sea? Marine specimens are usually collected, but it doesn't have to be by you the homesteader. Unless you want to start a full-time marine specimen company and do your own collecting, why not pay local fishermen and  crabbers to bring specimens to you from the culls of their catch? Some marine invertebrates could be bred in salt water tanks, as well. Want to see some biological supplier sites?
