I collect minerals from many of the states that I visit, as a keepsake. If you truly are interested in some field trips, why not contact the Georgia Mineral Society? In college I went along with the Rome chapter on several trips. 

I am especially interested in plant fossils. There are no fossils in my part of Georgia, but in the northwest part of the state are coal beds rich with plant fossils. Click here for details:

Imagine the vast swampy forests that once grew along the western flank of Appalachia from what is now Alabama all the way to Pennsylvania! You can hold a piece of that ancient world in your hands.
