"We live for each other, not for ourselves." Cyane
From Greece to Siberia, here we list the Queens, Regents & other sister Amazons encountered by Xena & Gabrielle.
The beautiful queen of the Northern Amazons who was brutally murdered by Xena, her blood was used by Alti to trap her and her tribe in limbo preventing them from crossing over. |
Later, Xena makes amends by helping Cyane (along with the other Amazons she'd killed) to reach the Amazon afterlife. |

Queen Melosa was a fierce warrior and the proud queen of the Amazons. When Terreis, her true sister is killed by an arrow, Melosa accepts that Terreis' right of caste belongs to Gabrielle and that she is now an Amazon princess. |
Gabrielle chooses Xena as her champion to fight Melosa but Melosa is defeated by Xena and so loses the right to rule. However, instead of killing her, Xena shows her the truth about the plot by Krykus to start an Amazon-Centaur war. |
This enables Melosa and Tyldus, the Centaur leader, to join forces and overthrow the evil warlord. Melosa is later killed by Velasca, her adopted daughter. |

Terreis was the sister of Queen Melosa of the Amazons. |
She was killed by the arrow of one of Krykus' men and her dying wish was that Gabrielle accept her right of caste in return for risking her life to protect her. |

A brave and spirited Greek Amazon, we first meet Ephiny in "Hooves And Harlots". In this episode, she not only overcomes her prejudice against the Centaurs, she actually ends up marrying Phantes - a Centaur! |
From this union, she has a son called Xenan who is delivered by Xena herself. However, Phantes is killed trying to protect his wife and unborn child. |
When Gabrielle is dying in "Is There A Doctor In The House" she asks Ephiny to accept her right of caste. Although Gabrielle survives (of course!) she later asks Ephiny to take her place as rightful queen of the Amazons. |
Ephiny agrees to rule until Gabrielle returns but is tragically killed in battle by Brutus (in "End Game"). |
This isn't the last we see of Ephiny though. She appears as a ghost to Gabrielle in "Last of the Centaurs", when she fears for the life of Xenan. All the Centaurs have been wiped out and he is the last remaining one alive. With Gabrielle and Xena's help, Xenan is saved and Ephiny can be at peace. |
A gutsy Amazon who stands with Ephiny as her Captain against Velasca (see "The Quest"). She is later killed in battle in "Endgame".
Eponin is the Amazon Weapons Master who teaches Gabrielle how to use a staff. She appears to take Gabrielle under her wing, encouraging her to learn the ways of the Amazon people.
Chilapa is Ephiny's successor as queen of the Amazons (see "Endgame"). Although Ephiny acted as ruler in Gabrielle's absence, she did this on condition that she would step down once Gabrielle returned to the tribe. However, when Ephiny is killed in battle by Brutus, Gabrielle is forced to act as regent. Once the war is over, Gabrielle appoints Chilapa as the next queen, declining to take the Queen's Mask for herself.
An evil shamaness whom Xena befriended in her bad old days and who promised to make Xena "destroyer of nations" (see "Adventures In The Sin Trade I" and "II"). Whilst searching for Gabrielle, Xena discovers that Alti is preventing dead Amazons from passing through the gate into the afterlife and, feeling remorse for causing the deaths of these Northern Amazons (notably Cyane) she vows to help them against Alti. |
This makes Alti her enemy, of course, and Alti shows Xena a vision of the future (Xena and Gabrielle crucified together). Xena's hope is now renewed as she knows Gabrielle must still be alive and this renews her strength and resolve, enabling her to kill Alti. |
However, Alti returns (see "Between The Lines") and Xena has to destroy her all over again! |
Despite being trapped in the spirit world, Alti makes a final bid to return to the material realm by stealing the soul of Xena's unborn child so she will be born instead (see "Them Bones, Them Bones"). After Gabrielle is nearly killed in the spirit world, Xena travels there herself and tricks Alti into thinking she has won. |
A battle ensues between the two and Alti's spirit is finally destroyed (although of course, death is never the end in the Xenaverse so she could return). |
The disobedient Amazon who appears to be partly responsible for the death of Ephiny by refusing to follow orders (see "Endgame"). Amarice is strong-willed and has little respect for Gabrielle at first, being bent on vengeance against Brutus for killing Ephiny. |
She believes an Amazon queen should be prepared to fight and kill her enemies. |
When captured by the Romans, along with Eli, Gabrielle and Xena, she is defiant and nearly loses her life because of it (see "Ides Of March"). However, she manages to escape with Eli whilst Xena and Gabrielle face crucifixion. |
Amarice returns with Eli and Joxer to reclaim Xena and Gabrielle's bodies from the Romans (see "Fallen Angel"). When her friends are resurrected by Eli, she travels with them for a while. However, when they visit the tribe of the Northern Amazons, Amarice's secret is revealed to Gabrielle: that she is not a true Amazon (see "Them Bones, Them Bones"). |
Although Gabrielle tells Amarice that this makes no difference to their friendship, Amarice decides to remain with the Northern Amazons to learn more about their ways. This is the last time we see Amarice and we later learn that she was killed whilst defending the tribe (see "Lifeblood"). |
The sly Amazon who overthrows Melosa then claims the right to be queen (see "The Quest"). Velasca tries to persuade Gabrielle to make her queen, but Gabrielle refuses and takes the Mask of the Queen herself. |
Angered by this, Velasca takes Autolycus prisoner and discovers the Dagger of Helios in his possession. This enables her to find out about the ambrosia which he and Gabrielle are trying to retrieve in order to revive Xena. After an exhausting fight, Velasca is seriously wounded but manages to recover some ambrosia. |
After eating this, she becomes a goddess (see "A Necessary Evil"). Xena then has to free Callisto and make her a goddess also in order to beat Velasca. |
Finally, Xena manages to trap both Callisto and Velasca in a lava flow which she believes will hold them there forever. |

Varia is a fiery Amazon and was the second-in-command to Queen Marga. We first meet her in the episode "Coming Home", when she explains to Xena that Ares is trying to kill the Amazons. She also asks Eve to show her some fighting moves. However, when Eve uses a certain move, Varia realises that she is Livia of Rome, who killed many of her people. |
Varia challenges Xena over this and insists that Eve must be tried for her crimes against the Amazons. Gabrielle releases Eve but Varia hints that this is not the end of the matter. |
In "Dangerous Prey", Varia is searching for Queen Marga, who has gone missing. Someone is trapping and killing Amazons and Marga has gone to search for her missing people. Varia wants to go after her queen but Xena says she will do this. |
When Varia finds Xena with Marga, she thinks that Marga is passing on her right of caste to Xena by handing her her necklace. She shows animosity towards Xena and the inevitable conclusion happens: they end up fighting and Xena saves Varia's life. |
From this moment, Varia begins to listen to Xena and seeks her advice. Once Prince Morloch has been dealt with, Queen Marga's spirit is sent to the Land of the Dead and Xena passes the queen's necklace and title to Varia. |

Queen Marga is the current queen of the Greek Amazons, at the time that Xena and Gabrielle have redeemed Eve and Xena has slain half the Olympian gods.
Following a skirmish with Ares' army, Marga thanks Xena for her help and introduces herself and her second-in-command, Varia (see "Coming Home"). Marga then asks Xena to kill Ares, as he seems intent on wiping out her tribe. |
However, when Marga discovers that Xena has brought Livia, the bitch of Rome, into Amazon territory she refuses Xena's help and prepares for war against Ares' troops. Xena manages to draw Ares into a fist fight and, believing Ares to be mad, his troops flee. |
Marga appears once more in "Dangerous Prey", where she is hunted down by Prince Morloch whilst trying to find out why members of her tribe have been disappearing. Morloch captures Marga in a cruel snare, tortures her and then sends her back to her tribe to give them a message. Xena finds Marga, who gives her queen's necklace to Xena to be passed on to Varia. Marga then dies in Xena's arms. |

A member of the Northern Amazon tribe, Yakut is a mere girl when Xena arrives on the scene. Xena teaches her the shamanic ways so that she can protect her people. |
When Xena visits the Amazons again, Yakut is their leader and she helps Xena against Alti but she is no match for the evil shamaness and is nearly killed. |
When Xena returns once again to visit the tribe, she discovers that Yakut is dead but her spirit contacts Xena and tells her that she cannot cross to the other side unless Xena helps her. Yakut helps Xena find an ancient magical item that will show the Amazons that hatred and violence is not the way for them. Only then can she cross over into the Amazon afterlife. Xena convinces the Amazons that their ways must change and Yakut's spirit is freed. |

Otere was the orphan that Borias adopted, much to Xena's annoyance. Later, long after Borias was dead, Xena met Otere again. She was now living with the Northern Amazons and Xena helped her and Yakut against Alti. |
However, when Xena returned to the tribe, although Yakut was still there, no mention was made of Otere so her fate is not known. |
