Charity 'Come and Sing' : Brahms Requiem

Stephen James was born in Cambridge in 1950 and embarked on a Music teaching course at the Colchester Institute. Following a period when the violin was his first instrument, he took up singing, and studied with Norman Tattersall and the distinguished tenor Alexander Young. His professional singing career began with membership of the BBC Singers (then known as the BBC Chorus) during which time he gave many first performances, appearing, recording and broadcasting regularly at all the major London concert halls. Stephen has also sung with John Eliot Gardiner’s Monteverdi Choir and worked with many eminent conductors including Sir Colin Davis, Pierre Boulez and Olivier Messiaen.

As a soloist he has worked extensively in oratorio and sung for numerous choral societies. He has also enjoyed singing with Winchester Cathedral Choir under the direction of David Hill. More recently he has taken up the role of conductor of the Taverner Singers, a recently formed Hampshire based chamber choir.

Stephen also composes for the Panama Music Library, writing in many and varied styles. His music has been heard around the world on radio and television.
