Morphology of etch pits in man-made and natural quartz crystals under hydrothermal conditions

M.Chr.Maleev

A detailed study about the morphology of etch pits in natural and man-made quartz crystals under hydrothermal conditions in carbonate solutions (fig.1) and ammonium bifluorite (fig.2) were achieved. The experiments were conducted in the temperature range 300 - 450 oC, in 0.25 up to 3 mol solutions and pressure between 100 to 180 MPa. The observations performed show that the morphology of the etch pits is to be considered as very informative about the study of natural dissolved (etched) quartz crystals, as well as about the quality and impurities contained in man-made crystals.
