2000 Schedule and Results

    January 20 - Central Florida Scottish Highland Games - Orlando, FL
    At Orlando this year, two dancers travelled to compete. They did quite well in a very competitive Premier field and they danced at Disney's Epcot Center.

    April 8 - Ocean City Highland Dance Competition - Ocean City, NJ
    Nine Columbia School dancers attended this special competition held to raise money for the 2000 USIR Championships being held in Philadelphia in July. The dancers placed quite well in a very competitive field. One of our Intermediate dancers took the trophy for her division and both of our Premiers won money for second overall in their respective age divisions.

    April 8 - Anne Arundel Scottish Festival Ceilidh - Crownsville, MD
    Three Columbia School dancers who did not attend the O.C. competition performed at this ceilidh, an annual event held to raise money for October's Anne Arundel Scottish Festival. The Columbia School has danced at this event for the last several years.

    April 29 - Celtic Festival of Southern Maryland - Prince Frederick, MD
    Six Columbia School dancers competed at the 2000 Southern Maryland competition. Several of them won awards ranging from second place to sixth place. Two of the pre-premiers earned stamps and one of our premiers earned money for her achievements. A group choreography also placed second.

    May 6 - National Capital Area Celtic Festival - Rockville, MD
    Held annually in Rockville, MD, this year's NCACF featured demonstrations by the Columbia School, including a full Hullachan and a variety of Highland and National dances. The Columbia School has participated in this event for the last several years.

    May 6 - Red Bank Celtic Festival - Red Bank, NJ
    Bonnie Wylie, director of the Columbia School, judged the 2000 highland dance competition at the Red Bank, New Jersey, celtic festival.

    May 20 - Colonial Highland Games - Fairhill, MD
    As the last major competition before the Eastern Region Championships, Fairhill was a tough competition with many dancers braving the cold, rainy day. Nine Columbia School dancers were among them. By day's end, we had won two sixths, three fourths, and a third. One of our beginner dancers earned a stamp, edging her closer to Novice.

    May 27 - Eastern Region FUSTA Championships - Philadelphia, PA
    Two of the Columbia School's Premier dancers competed at this year's Regionals - the qualifier for this year's USIR National Championships.

    June 3 - Bonnie Brae Scottish Festival and Games - Liberty Corner, NJ
    Two Columbia School dancers competed at this New Jersey competition. One took straight fourths and the other took straight seconds.

    June 3 - McHenry Highland Games - Deep Creek Lake, MD
    Bonnie Wylie, director of the Columbia School, is slated to judge the 2000 highland dance competition at the Deep Creek Lake, Maryland highland games.

    June 11 - Steppingstone Celtic Festival - Havre de Grace, MD
    As in years past, the Columbia School performed two shows at this annual festival. A total of five dancers performed a variety of highland and national dances, while explaining the history of each and the in's and out's of our art form.

    July 15 - United States Inter Regional Championships - Philadelphia, PA
    As this year's USIR is virtually in our backyard, quite a few Columbia School dancers plan to attend the Nationals as spectators. Several of our pre-premiers competed in the Pre-Premier competition held on Friday, July 14.

    July 22 - Virginia Scottish Games - Alexandria, VA
    At this year's competition in Alexandria, VA, nine Columbia School dancers competed. All four of our beginners that competed won stamps, with one missing the trophy by one placing. Our primary placed well, winning a third and both of our premiers did well, winning cash prizes.

    August 6 - Montreal Scottish Festival - Montreal, QUE
    This year, three dancers from the Columbia School made the 10+ hour trip to Montreal for the Games. One achieved her first award since moving up to Intermediate, winning 6th place in the Sword dance. One of our beginners earned a stamp, winning a second and two thirds.

    August 25-26 - The Cowal Gathering - Cowal, Scotland
    The World Championships of Highland Dance - Winners of the USIR will compete here.

    September 9 - Ligonier Highland Games - Ligonier, PA
    This year, six Columbia School dancers competed in these fall games held in western Pennsylvania's scenic Laurel Highlands. They did quite well, with one of our young beginners earning a stamp and our Intermediate dancer earning three seconds and a third. One of our two attending Premiers also earned cash prizes in the adult Premier category.

    September 16-17 - The Maryland Renaissance Festival
    The Columbia School performed on both Saturday and Sunday for this year's Maryland Rennaissance Festival Scottish Weekend. A total of 10 dancers performed a variety of Highland and National dances in four performances over two days, accompanied by piper Ed Kitlowski. Thanks, Ed!

    September 16-17 - The Loon Mountain Highland Games - Loon Mountain, NH
    Bonnie Wylie, director of the Columbia School, judged the 2000 highland dance competition at the Loon Mountain, New Hampshire highland games.

    September 23 - Williamsburg Scottish Festival - Williamsburg, VA
    This year, three Columbia School dancers attended these fall games. One of our Beginners earned a stamp, placing first in her Sword Dance.

    September 24 - Baltimore Irish Festival - Baltimore, MD
    Two of our Columbia School dancers performed at this Irish festival with a local pipe band.

    September 28 - Police Emerald Society Convention - Baltimore, MD
    This year, like last year, a few of our adult dancers performed with local pipe band for this gathering of police officers from around the East Coast.

    September 30 & October 1 - Celtic Classic - Bethlehem, PA
    Columbia School dancers plan to compete in these fall games in 2000.

    October 8 - Fells Point Festival - Fells Point [Baltimore], MD
    Columbia School dancers are scheduled to perform with a local pipe band for this annual community event in downtown Baltimore's Fells Point neighborhood.

    October 14 - Anne Arundel Scottish Games - Crownsville, MD
    The Columbia School hosts the dance competition for the Anne Arundel games each year. Several of our dancers also compete here.

    October 28 & 29 - Richmond Highland Games - Richmond, VA
    Many Columbia School dancers compete in this two-day contest each year.
