STAGE LEFT. CHRIS DREYER.
At 22 years old, singer-songwriter-guitarist Chris Dreyer already has an impressive catalogue of original songs to his credit. Especially for a performer who picked up the instrument at 19 and began writing within his first month of learning. It is Dreyer’s completely natural and uncanny ability to write and the infectious original sound of his music that continually brings praise to his work.
Also a performer on the theatrical stage, it would seem he was born to perform.
Chris was born in St. Cloud, Minnesota and spent his childhood there and in Toronto, Canada with his father, also spending time with his mother in Miami. It was perhaps his father’s musicianship that first sparked his musical interest. He was a guitar player who performed for a time in his life, even with such guitar greats as Leo Kottke. It was early on that Chris began to develop his own love for music. He began to listen to The Beatles at a young age that greatly influenced and impacted him.
Chris’s interest in the arts and theatre led him eventually to The Florida State University in Tallahassee, a school renowned for its theatre program. He entered the school as a theatre major and soon after picked up the guitar. While starting his studies, he began to write immediately. It was at this point he started to discover his ability to relate to people through songs, and he began to realize his uncanny knack for melody.
Chris traveled to London in the fall of 2000 to begin studies at the FSU London Centre. While still concentrating on theatre, he began to record a demo album there with producer Jono Buchanan. Aside from essentially having the world at his fingertips in one of the great cultural centers of the world, Chris also began to have many life experiences
which would become the subjects or inspirations for more than two dozen of his songs.
As the semester grew to an end, it became very clear that not only had Chris found his true talent, but that he also needed to stay another semester to spend more time in the studio and continue his creative output and growth.
After arriving in London for his second semester in 2001, Chris met Scott Taylor, an FSU student and musical prodigy who was is London studying classical music. They spent an evening playing and jamming on some of Chris’s original music. Their chemistry was apparent immediately. Scott had the musical ability with no songs of his own. Chris had an impressive list of original songs, but was looking for something to make them really come alive. What started as a simple jam session turned into a full-blown concert in a London flat that lasted until 8am. Neither the players nor their listeners wanted the night to end, but it also became very apparent that their partnership would not end there.
