She grew up in North Sumatera in an environment of Malay culture, simulteneously the heritage of Javanese and European culture. She began her musical studies at the age of 7 and started almost immediately to improvise freely on the piano. Her talents for composing were revealed during an early age.
From 1955 until 1967, she studied in various conservatories in Europe like Amsterdam, pupil of composer Henk Badings ; Ecole Normale de Musique, Paris; Graduated from the Conservatory of Santa Cecilia, Rome in Piano, Composition and Musical Acoustic. Since 1984 her compositions have been highly inspired by Islamic idioms, e.g. combining orchestral music with reciting of The Holy Qur'an, choir, traditional percussion etc., finally giving innovation to the existing Indonesian Islamic music. Applying the rhythmic of the TAJWID (correct pronounciation of reading the Qur'an) into her musical language gives her new horizons to be more explored and has become an endless source for her musical inspirations. Some of her piano works have been recorded by The Deutsche Rundfunk (German Radio), interpreted by Indonesian pianist Ananda Sukarlan, and broadcasted regularly between November 1995 and June 1996.
