The radio alarm clock started playing the Backstreet Boys Millennium compact
disc. Under normal circumstances, the music would be pleasing to the ear, sometimes
soft and slow, other times fast and catchy. Here, it served only one purpose
- to wake my sister up. Unfortunately, the amazingly loud and blaring music
again woke me up instead of my sister.
I tried to catch a few more minutes of sleep but it was impossible. The radio
continued to sing as if it was unawareof the time. I left the room, hoping that
she would wake up soon and switch her own radio off. Only she herself, and no other,
can wake her up.
Everyone else was asleep. Their doors were shut and that was how I knew. They
were shut to keep the frosty cold air from the air-conditioner in. I walked
to the main door and unlocked it. The newspapers fell to the floor with a dull
thud. I collected the papers and then proceeded to preparing a simple breakfast
for myself.
After breakfast, I went to the flower bed to check on my "little green
friends". All the seven potted plants were thirsty. I watered them and
the soil greedily drank every single drop. A rumbling sound caused me to look
up at the sky. Black clouds were gathered together - an ominous sign. The morning
sun was nowhere to be seen. Thunder and Lightning were quarrelling again. The
clouds were putting on "black faces". The morning got darker. It would
soon rain.
The radio could not be heard anymore, which meant that my sister was finally
awake. The master bedroom was open, a sign that my parents were up. I saw
mother walking into the kitchen. My brother's door swung open and out came a
sleepy-eyed , messy-haired boy. Everything was starting to bustle with activity.
I went to the fish tank. Most of the goldfish were still sleeping. Only a tiny
orange bubble-eyed fish was awake. Bubble-eyes was a fish with huge bubbles
beneath its eyes. They ressemled balloons. It looked at me, opened its mouth
repeatedly and demanded food. I sprinkled pellets into the tank. The rest awoke
and swam clumsily to the top to swallow pellets. They must have sensed the food.
It was fun to watch the chubby fish of different colours snacking away. Within
seconds, the food disappeared quickly. They all looked at me and begged for
more, knowing that I would have to give them and how could I not? They were
so cute! For some unknown reason, they never seemed to get full.
Suddenly, a splash of rain entered the house. I rushed to close the windows.
It was a heavy downpour. Thunder and Lightning were fighting. Lightning kept
illuminating the sky. Its flashes were brilliant. The whole sky continually
turned from blue to white and back to blue again. Thunder roared angrily. Strong
winds howled and forced the trees as well as the clouds' tears to bend to one
side. The leaves swayed to the harsh winds.
Roads were flooded. Drains were overflowing with muddy water. People were hiding
in sheltered areas. The whole scene was magnificent, beautiful. Nature was showing
her power. I was only too glad that I could watch from the comfort of my own
home and was not caught in the fray.
My siblings were watching the television and I joined them. We ate potato chips
as we watched, sitting on the comfortable sofa for two long hours. After that,
the rain subsided. Thunder and Lightning had finally reconciled. The golden
ball glowed warmly among the clouds. I opened the windows. People were back
to doing their activities.
The hours had flown quickly. Morning was nearly over. It turned out quite well.
