The Frightened Child

(written by Dana Miler)
Jimmy Anderson was a three-year-old boy who lived in his little world of fear. He feared clowns, shadows, earthworms, gross things, heights and even death.

In school, Jimmy was often teased about his fear of gross things and every time the other kids would frighten him by putting plastic insects in his pencil case. Whenever there was a thunderstorm, Jimmy would hide under the table, cover his face and shiver while the other kids would make faces, point and laugh at him. Because of this, Jimmy did not have many friends except for the science geeks and the computer geeks. He was a very quiet and shy boy.

His mother was worried for him. She tried all sorts of things like talking to him, telling him how shadows come about and that clowns are to make people laugh, but none of that seemed to work. Once, when his grandpa told him about monsters in the closet, Jimmy was up all night with his eyes peeled under his bed and the next morning, his mother found him in the bathtub with the shower curtains closed.

One night, Jimmy woke up in the middle of the night. His stomach growled so loud that he scared himself. Jimmy climbed out of bed and crawled to the direction of the kitchen, hoping to find a glass of milk. As Jimmy crawled out, he kept looking left and right, looking out for "monsters". At his right, he heard a soft eerie howl. He turned slowly and saw the curtains moved. Outside, an old tree " danced" at the window. Jimmy got scared and crawled behind the door to hide. He held his breath and crawled down the stairs. He crawled past the living room and finally, he reached the kitchen.

The refrigerator door was just too high for him. He tried and tried again and again but he just could not reach it.

Disappointed and angry, Jimmy crawled back to his room and ignored the distractions around him. Before he shut his eyes, a smile was found on his face. Jimmy felt so proud of himself because he was not afraid anymore.

Jimmy felt lighter in his heart and went to bed. The boy, who everyone once knew, the one who feared many things, was now changed.
