Girl In The Rain

There always lies the hope
Of calmness in life's storm
That we will meet with one whose heart
With love is full and warm

Our treasures we will share
Our failings we'll redress
And though the sun of love may burn
We'll shun hate's wilderness

Yet lightning strikes but once
And never more again
As in this tale of true love found
With the girl in the rain

The wind blows strong, the rain it clatters
Beating a jig on the closed shop shutters
And pregnant raindrops pound and spatter
Running rivers down the gutters

Of all the trudging crowd with faces down
Hauling wild umbrellas through the night
It's only her I see, as she looks round.
Face now caught and fixed in rain soaked lights

And there upon her face is painted such a scene
Etched and drawn by art of malign skill
To catch this very night and place it there
A world of pain and doubt, and issues unresolved
And yet, so still, caught within a moment stark and bare

A quick glimpse of her grief is all she shows
Turn away, oh turn away and see me not
Others in the crowd have seen, and share
in mute telepathy, the warning felt and understood
to space themselves. A moment briefly shared yet best forgot

Of all the trudging crowd with faces down
Emotions closed and shuttered for the night
Why do I see her as she looks round?
And why does she fix me with rain soaked sight?

Emotions shake, and hearts a flutter
We look more closely, illusions shatter
For there, the truth, so clearly uttered
A love so strong that nothing matters

Heart and hope now whole
Our impulse sways us on
I go to her she comes to me
We seek to be as one

Her pain I will absorb
My failings she'll forgive
We'll shine so bright and be so free
In love forever live

Lightning strikes but once
And never more again
What would your true answer be
To the girl in the rain?
