The following five main rules ("go dai gensoku") were developed by Koichi Tohei sensei as a means a helping people to do Aikido with Mind and Body Coordinated. (shin shin toitsu Aikido)
Those who take the sho dan (First dan) test in Japan are required to write out these five major rules. The rules must be written using Japanese kanji.

"Shin shin toitsu aikido no go dai gensoku"
Five Major Principles for Aikido with Mind and Body Co-ordinated

"ki ga deteiru"
1. Ki is flowing from your body.

"aite no kokoro o shiru"
2. You know your opponent's mind.

"aite no ki o tatobu"
3. You respect the ki of your opponent.

"aite no tachiba ni tatsu"
4. You stand in the same position as your opponent

"sossen kyukou"
5. You lead with confidence
