Hotohori is a Suzaku Seishi. He gives other people a feeling of not knowing what he is thinking about but he is actually a mature and peace-loving guy. As he grew up among grown-ups and brought up from young as the head of state, he lacks a youthful appearance, but that could not be helped. As a king, once he is sitting on the throne, he had to become stern and remote. He also lacks parental love and perhaps that is why he is attracted to Miaka by her cheerful and youthfulness and only in the presence of Miaka does he display his teenage side. His greatest good point or bad point is perhaps that he is too confident in his beautiful appearance and because he looks so beautiful, he is often mistaken as a woman in the story.
