Nowhere to turn, no one to go to
Without a home without a friend
Without a face to say hello to
-Les Miserables
Remy LeBeau stumbled along the ice-covered slopes of Antarctica and reminded himself why he was there. Dere was no other way, He was dere and Gambit couldn’t tell de truth. I knew dat dis might cost me my life but I never thought dat she would do it. Remy knew that it wasn’t just her, it was the memories that tore at his heart and soul day in and out. The pain and suffering that comes with the knowledge that the world is cruel place. Remy knew that it was himself that would condemn him to death in Antarctica.
He stared at the cold sun and plodded along his way. Earlier, he saw a pack of seals. Maybe he could get something to eat that day. Then he paused, sensing an unfamiliar sound. He raised his blood shot eyes to the sun, wincing in pain as the rays hit his sensitive corneas. It was a plane, not the X-Men, hopefully not Sinister.
He hid behind a rock outcropping and peered over the side. It was two people, one man and one woman. And they were looking for someone. Vaguely, he sensed a delicate touch which smelled like roses and spices. Then he realized that the world was turning around and around, he tried to steady himself on the rock but found himself slipping into dreams. He tried to open his eyes and saw a pair of emerald green eyes. Then it went dark.
Remy opened his eyes and realized that he was in a bed, a warm cozy fluffy bed. He smiled however briefly, then he remembered that he had no idea where he was. He examined his surroundings but didn’t recognize the place. It wasn’t a hospital but it wasn’t a jail either. He looked at the I.V. in his arm and pulled it out with a grimace. The machine began beeping and a woman ran inside.
Her shoulder-length gold hair shone like the sun and her emerald green eyes danced sparkly across his sight. She was beautiful, yet she wasn’t. He frowned and realized what was going on. She had a charm power similar to his own, not as powerful but enough.
She smiled at him and examined the machine. “You shouldn’t do that. The machine has been feeding you for the last week.” She cocked her head and nodded. “You’re getting better but you’re not up to much yet. Stay in bed and relax.”
“Who are you?” Remy asked suspiciously. He was too used to people acting like they were his friends when they wanted something from him. “Where am I?”
She sat down next to him and looked him in the face. “I am Bethany Richardson and you are in my house, in Los Angeles. My brother and I found you in Antarctica, or rather I sensed you. Just like you can sense me.”
Remy managed to keep the shock off of his face. “Don’t know what you’re talking about.”
“You are an Omega empathy, I am only an Alpha.” Bethany took his hand in hers. “I know you have been hurt and that you need to heal. I promise that I won’t hurt you or turn you into anyone.” She looked down at the comforter. “It just..”
The pain and hurt echoed his own and Remy couldn’t resist a kindred heart. Remy gently lifted her chin and meet her eyes with his red ones. “Petite, Remy owe you a debt. He can tell dat you also hurt and dat you need comforting.” Throwing all caution to the wind, he said, “We can link and dat might help.”
Bethany seemed startled but the need for someone, for love, for companionship was so strong that she threw herself into his arms and into his mind. Two minds entwined like twins in their mother’s womb. Both taking comfort and pleasure from the contact, both lost souls finding a mate.
I
am named Bethany, before I was someone else. But she is gone
I
am named Remy LeBeau, before I was someone else. But he is gone
I
want to be alone, too much pain, suffering, fear, anger. No one can hurt me.
Yet I want a lover, a companion, someone who understands me
I
want to be me, not him. Too many memories, too much pain and suffering. I want
someone who understands me, who knows the truth
I
know the truth
I
understand you
Will
you be my friend? My love? My soul?
Will you be my friend? My love? My soul?
Yes
Yes
In the end, they didn’t need any words at all.
