My dark destiny
All that I am and all that I will ever be
Is overshadowed by the coming night
A struggle between darkness and light
And I am its vortex, the battleground,
The bloodied field, the sacred mound.
A place of Light’s victory or its defeat
Yet my life’s path will eventually lead
To my dark destiny
My dark destiny
A look in time’s mirror shows me
Harbinger of death and destruction
Angel of vengeance and retribution
Blood runs on my hands and I weep
I murdered thousands in their sleep
That is what I can and what I will be
Some day we will see which one is me
My dark destiny
Prologue
In another time, in another place ...
Michael the Archangel leaned wearily on his sword, looking at the blood splattered battlefield where once he lead a war against Hell. Although the battle was over, the repercussions were devastating. They had lost so many good warriors and friends. Even those who remained did not survive unscathed.
Michael looked at the patrol leader coming towards him and inwardly shuddered. The Dark Ones had captured Kai and the torture inflicted on him left a mark on him; his eyes were red on black, demon eyes. His link to the Host was shattered yet he was still alive. But he wasn’t an angel, not anymore.
Kai stopped in front of Michael, red-brown hair tied over his shoulders and hanging to his waist. Wings of purple-laced energy could be seen flickering in and out of existence. Archangel, the Fallen have retreated and the wounded are being tended to. His expressionless face didn’t reveal his emotions but one could taste the hatred in his voice.
Michael turned to his old friend and wondered what they
did to Kai that could cause an Archangel to break away from the Host. The Mark
should have been blue, like all angels, or black like all of the Fallen. His
Mark was bright red, the color of blood, the color of death Most of the Host
avoided Kai because he was different, darker. But Michael owned the archangel
too much not to give him the respect he deserved. Kai, what did He say?
He said that I am to be sent to Earth. Kai didn’t bother to hide the bitterness in his voice. That I need to heal in spirit before He will reestablish my link to the Host.
Michael arched an eyebrow at Kai. You could use some downtime after what happened to
you. But something else is bothering you.
Kai stared at the battlefield and watched the bodies of
the dead slowly disappear. During my time
with the Dark Ones, I nearly became one of the Shades. Part of me welcomed it:
the rage, the hatred, the lust, I would have stayed. Kai refused to
look at Michael. If not for Seralyn, I would
have led the Legion against the Host. It, Kai paused not knowing how
to describe the emotion. Scares me that I
would do that.
Michael shivered as well, golden wings fluttering in the wind. He sensed Kai walking away and wondered if he would see him again. Good luck and wind to thy wings, my brother. Slowly, Kai’s form became insubstantial and disappeared. Kai’s soul would be taken to Earth and reborn in a human child. Michael watched the soul be guided away, and then walked towards the rest of the Host with other matters in his mind. He shook his head and whispered, Things couldn’t get any worse.
A dark figure formed from the shadows covering the battlefield. Nothing could be seen of the figure except for pure white eyes, which held maliciousness and an innate evil that possessed all of the Dark Ones. It hissed. The Dark Angel shall be reborn and we will be waiting. The figure disappeared into the shadows, unnoticed by the angels.
