This is a famous submarine.
USS "Skate" is the first of the first production
model class nuclear submarines, - but smaller than the even more famous
prototype, - the USS "Nautilus" with a displacement of 2980/3520 tons light/full
load.
But "Skate" holds the record of being the
first submarine to cross the Atlantic Ocean completely submerged with a
sealed atmosphere.
Also she won fame in maritime history by
passing under the ice of the North Pole and later she became the first
submarine to actually surface at the North Pole by crashing through
the ice.
