U.S. MILITARY PERSONNEL IN JAPAN

Okinawa: 27,676 (Army 910, Navy 1,441, Air Force 7,244 and Marine Corps 18,081).
Mainland Japan: 16,209 (Army 1,017, Navy 4,420, Air Force 7,730 and Marine Corps 3,042).
In addition, there are 13,041 U.S. Navy personnel deployed on 7th Fleet vessels, including the carrier USS Independence, homeported in Yokosuka, south of Tokyo. These are not considered among those stationed in Japan.
U.S. civilians employed by U.S. forces in Japan: Okinawa 2,150, mainland Japan 2,915.


MILITARY BASES IN JAPAN:

Out of 135 military facilities totalling 980,662 square kilometres (378,536 square miles) used by U.S. forces in Japan, 94 totalling 315,583 square kilometres (121,815 square miles) are controlled solely by the U.S. military. Others are jointly used by the U.S. and Japanese military. Forty of those 94 facilites are on Okinawa, taking up as much as 75 percent of the land used by the U.S. military in Japan.

Of the facilities on Okinawa, Japan has been asking the United States under a 1990 bilateral agreement to either revert or scale down 17 of them, such as the U.S. Navy's port dock area in Okinawa's provincial capital of Naha. Talks are still in progress. The 40 facilites on Okinawa take up 20 percent of the land on the island, which has a population of 1.3 million.
