"There is no way that she is ‘the ultimate weapon’", snapped Wufei.
"Oh, but you are wrong", she said, smirking and pulling up her sleeve to reveal the symbols ‘P-331-XX’ branded onto her arm, "You are terribly, terribly wrong."
Silence. Shock. They coursed through the room like blood through veins. There was no way that… that what she had said could be true.
"But… Dr. J. your letter said we were looking for a weapon, not a… a, a person", stammered Quatre
"That I did. And there is your weapon. She is even more the perfect warrior than Heero; she is a living machine. Is that not right 331?"
"You are correct Dr. J. I was created simply for the purpose of destruction by the scientists at the Midvale Research Center. However I am only a scientific error, not what the scientists had wanted to create. I shall live with the error that I am for eternity", she said not changing her impassive face or her voice expression.
"Really. What was the mistake anyway."
"I was a double ‘x’."
"Oh", said Duo not sure what she meant.
"I’ll finish your story for you Anashi. Quatre, why don’t you show her to a room."
"This way, Anashi." Quatre left, followed by the strange girl. When he returned Dr. J. continued.
"Before we began building the gundams and training you five to pilot the them, the other scientists and I started experimenting with gene splicing and other forms of genetic alterations in the attempt to create the perfect humans, and turn them into the perfect soldiers. After many years of work we finally succeeded in creating what we wanted in the year AC 178. However we did make one error. All of the soldiers were supposed to be male, but we realized a bit too late that one fetus was female. Not wanting to destroy it we decided to use the child as a variable to test the effects of our experiments on a female specimen."
"Specimen! SPECIMEN!! She’s not some rat or something!" screamed Duo. "How can you refer to a person; a living breathing person; as an IT?! a THING?!"
"Duo shut up and let him finish", said Heero, who seemed a bit disgusted at the idea himself.
"As I was saying, we decided to see how a female would wear under the training. But I’m afraid in our attempts to create the perfect warrior we went a bit to far. We found located the part of the human brain that causes emotion and removed it." At this statement Quatre and Duo gasped quite loudly; and Wufei, Trowa, and Heero looked like they might throw up. "Thus causing the specimens never to be able to feel compassion or pity for anyone. We never exposed them to any emotions so that they would never learn to have feelings. They were taught to be completely self-sufficient from the day they were born. We taught them how to fight as a team, but never to truly depend on anyone. We created five altogether, but, not wanting anyone to suspect what we were doing, we gave them two names; a normal one and a number code. They were numbered 327-XY, 328-XY, 329-XY, 330-XY, and 331-XX. This number was branded onto their arms. Their names were Andrew, Lei, Tim, Joasai, and Anashi. We realized our mistake in training them to well when they were about seven years old. They would do anything to complete their missions, even kill innocent civilians. We decided at that point that we would find civilian children and train them instead. But we could net let our creations know this. So we all agreed that they had to be destroyed. We left them in their rooms and set of a chain of large explosions in such a way that it would look unintentional. All of them were destroyed, or so we thought until we went back into the building to find Anashi to be perfectly healthy and unhurt. The realization that we truly had created a living machine finally hit us at that point. We decided that we would keep her and train four civilian children. These were Heero, Wufei, Duo, and the first Trowa Barton. Anashi was originally trained to pilot the Sandrock. But, even without her teammates she was still too dangerous because of what we had made her. So we kept her isolated from the real world. We taught you, Quatre, to pilot the Sandrock. Anashi was used during the war for many of the guerilla attacks on the OZ bases. We kept her in the old facility where you found her. When the base was attacked we still had her locked in her room; which, though it contained everything she needed to survive, had no means of escape unless we unlocked it. She was in there for the two months that the soldiers were there and didn’t even know they existed. The window is a one way mirror. The walls are…
"YOU BASTARDS!!!!" screamed Duo, no longer able to hide his anger. "How in the world did you justify what you were doing?! You deprived a person of their life, of ever feeling alive, and forced them to still exist! You practically took away their souls! And then you didn’t even have the decency to put all of them out of their misery! How can you even stand to be near yourself with what you did?! Huh?! How?!" Duo couldn’t take it anymore. He had to get out of that room. He left in a hurry, not wanting the others to see the feelings he was truly suppressing.
The other pilots were none the better. Quatre was crying into Trowa’s shirt; Trowa had tears in his eyes and a face filled with pure contempt. Wufei was in a sate of pure shock, staring into the wall as though if he did it long enough he might be able to destroy it; Heero was just facing the computer screen with a look of raw, unoppressed hatred that seemed to radiate around the room. From what Dr. J. had said he knew this would be the hardest thing he and the others would ever have to deal with. He placed his hand on the laptop, slowly cutting the connection.
"Mission accepted."
Duo slowly crept down the hall looking for Anashi’s room. When he found it he opened the door and peered in. Good she was asleep. Very carefully he walked up to the bed. He could here her mumbling something very quietly. As he got closer he could hear her more clearly. //How could they do that to you?! Those a** holes. I’d kill them all right now, but it wouldn’t make any difference. You would probably have been such a nice person. To think, they had the guile to keep you locked up like some prisoner. Why I otta'…// Duo was suddenly moved from his reverie when Anashi started to toss in bed.
She opened her eyes and faced him with an almost questioning look on her face and uttered one small question. "Joasai?"
