Moonlight bathed the room in a soft glow. A lone figure remained sitting by the window. Ignoring the absence of light around him, he sat deep in thought. He paused to glance at the reflection in the paned glass.
"Treize, what did I do wrong? Why did you betray me?" Zechs sighed.
The memories were all coming back now. He could remember the many years of friendship, the lifetime they had shared. Although Zechs was only seventeen, he could recall every experience the two had. Their friendship was something not even the pains of war could break.
Zechs turned to survey the empty room. It had been three months since his friendship with Treize had blossomed into something more. The young blonde closed his eyes, he could still remember their first time. His first time.
* * * * * FLASHBACK * * * * *
Zechs stepped from the shower and began to towel himself dry. He glanced at the General seated comfortably in the hot tub. Treize had politely turned his head away from the blonde. Zechs brought the towel up to squeeze the water from his hair. Treize, assuming he was finished by now, turned back to the blonde hared young man,
"Milliar - eep!" He quickly turned away again, hand shielding his eyes, but doing nothing to control the flush creeping quickly to his cheeks. Zechs smiled at his friend. Treize is so modest.
Squeezing the last of the water from his platinum blonde hair, Zechs wrapped the towel around his waist and slowly rounded the hot tub. He now stood in front of Treize.
"Treize?" His friend flinched. His hand still covering his eyes. Zechs sighed. "Treize, please look at me." Treize made no move to comply. Zechs slowly reached up to the taunt face and gently pried the hand away. Treize looked backed at him questioningly. Never breaking their eyes contact, Zechs slowly reached for the towel about his waist. He released it with a slight tug, and it quickly fell about his ankles leaving the platinum blonde in all his glory.
Treize's eyes widened, then shut abruptly when he realized he was staring. Zechs sighed, then smiled slightly. He gently lowered himself into the tub next to his friend. Treize's eyes shot open when Zechs straddled his thighs and leaned over him.
"Milliardo, are you sure?" Treize embraced the young man perched on his lap. Zechs just smiled.
"If you'll have me I'm sure."
Treize began to plant gentle kisses down the blonde's long column of neck, reveling in the soft moans emitted by the other. He halted his administrations just long enough to plant a small butterfly kiss on the lips of the young man before him.
"Milliardo, will you let me make love to you?"
Zechs' smile broadened. It was all the answer Treize needed.
* * * * * END FLASHBACK * * * * *
Zechs smiled to himself. He could remember every touch, every word spoken that night. It was as if the two had been connected mind, body, and soul. Zechs had felt complete. He sighed softly. The nagging voice from the back of his mind decided to make an appearance.
If he loved you so much, then why did he betray you?
"I never actually asked him if there was another."
But he should have told you! You were his best friend! His lover! He owed you that much. Zechs shook his head sadly.
"I was a fool."
The sound of a key being turned in the lock and the slow opening of the door, brought Zechs' attention back to the present. A dark form entered the room, shutting the door softly behind him. Treize was deep in thought and didn't seem to notice the young blonde by the window. Zechs cleared his throat. Treize jumped in surprise.
"Whoâ - Milliardo! What are you doing here?" Although the older man looked surprised by the sudden visit, he couldn't mask his delight at seeing his lifelong friend. Zechs approached him warily.
"I want some answers, Treize," he murmured, eyes narrowing. "I think I deserve it."
Treize froze. He had expected this. Things had remained unsaid after their last encounter. He would have tried to seek out his friend and explain things to him if it wasn't for the fear that Zechs would push him away once again. Treize sighed.
"What do you want to know?"
Zechs paused only for a second. He had thought it out so many times. Planned each question carefully, not wanting to give in to the emotions coursing through him, not after all the grief the General, his friend had caused him. Now though, standing face to face with the one he had given his love to so freely, he found all conscience thought had evaded him once again. Zechs turned to Treize, and asked the only question he could muster.
"Why?"
Treize thought for a minute.
If I tell him the truth, he won't believe me. Treize glanced at Zechs, the younger man had crossed his arms over his chest and was waiting patiently. I could never lie to him.
"Milliardo, what you think you saw that night and what really happened are two different things. I know what you THINK you saw, but - "
"Please, refresh my memory."
Treize sighed. "You think you saw me betraying you with another.."
"I THINK I saw!?! Treize you were.. you were.." he paused, squeezing his eyes shut tightly. The pain was still there. "He - he was just a child, Treize! Barely a teen! And a Gundam pilot no less! He is the very person we are fighting against in this miserable war!" Zechs choked. Treize swallowed down the lump forming in his throat.
"Millia- "
"What was his name? Wufei? Tell me, Treize does he still keep you warm at night? Or did you betray him as well?" The young blonde faltered, tears forming in his eyes. He turned away, refusing to let Treize see him cry, squeezing his eyes shut against the rapid flow of tears. "Treize, what happened?"
Treize had been watching silently.
It still hurts me to see him cry.
"It was the night of our celebration banquet. OZ had just been recognized by the Earth Sphere Alliance. The party was long - you know how I hate long parties." Zechs just snorted. Treize cleared his throat and continued. "I remember there were many toasts that night. Too many to count. I think I must have had a full bottle of champagne before the night was out. Lady Une helped me to my quarters. She never was much of a drinker. I-I honestly can't remember much after that. I believe the boy Wufei may have come to my room through the window for a duel, but I was too drunken to fight. I - I don't know who seduced who, really." Treize looked down suddenly fascinated with the wall to wall carpeting. "I expect it was me, though. I can't remember much of anything else. Only you. I remember the pain on your face. How you looked when you saw us together like that."
"I came to surprise you." Treize glanced up at the sudden response. "I had been at the Nairobi base for nearly two weeks and was going crazy without you." Zechs turned back to the General, no longer caring if the tears were seen. "It killed me to see you with him that night. Not really because you had found another - but because I loved you and you didn't love me back."
"But, Milliardo, I've always loved you! I would never consciously do anything to hurt you. I was drunk and had been without your touch for so long.." he trailed off. "But I always loved you. And I always will."
The tears had stopped and Zechs' face was now unreadable. I-I need some time to think." He turned away from Treize and walked slowly to the door, pausing with the knob in hand. "Thank you, Treize... for everything." Treize stopped him.
"Milliardo, wait a minute." He winced at the commanding tone his voice had taken. Zechs froze and turned back slowly. His arms crossed over his chest defensively.
"Is that an order, General?" Zechs mocked the older man. Treize just stared back not knowing what to say. Zechs approached him slowly. "If it's an order, then I must stay and obey my commanding officer." He paused, inches from Treize's face now. "But if you're asking, I would like to leave now."
Treize's eyes watered with unshed tears.
"Please stay." It was barely more than a whisper. Zechs just shook his head.
"Goodbye Treize." He glanced down. "I - I'll never regret what we had together."
He slowly turned and left the room, shutting the door softly behind him. Treize still stared after him. "I won't stop you, Milliardo," he whispered to the empty room. "But I will never stop loving you either."
