Overwhelming Pain

by Lilock

Kai walked quietly down the hallway of the school's dorm rooms. She was really late. She had spent too much time in the pratice hall. Though she doubted that anyone would wake up if she made a lot of noise anyways.

Kai touched the door knob to her room and sighed. She excepted to see Duo, wake, waiting for her. He would ask her where she had been. She turned the knob and walked into the dark room. She noticed that the bed next to the window was empty. She sighed. Duo was out with the others. She put her instrument case down and walked into the bathroom to take a shower.

When she came out of the shower, she walked into a huge argument between Wufei and Heero. Kai sighed in relief, at least she was dressed. All five pilots were in her room. By the sound of the argument, they had been here for a few minutes.

"I think that their going to start looking for us. We need to leave." Wufei said. Kai rolled her eyes. It was the same argument they had been having for the past few nights. Wufei wanted to leave, thinking OZ would look for them there. Kai sighed and pushed Wufei off her bed.

"Why don't you all be parinod elsewhere? I'm tired and would like some sleep tonight." Kai said as she crawled under the covers of her bed. Quatre and Trowa turned and headed out of the door. Wufei sat stuned on the floor. "Out Wufei. Go get some sleep." Wufei glared at her, but it died after Kai returned the glare. He got up and left.

"I'd better get going too. I'll see you two in class tommorrow. Night, Kai." Heero said. He placed a kiss on Kai's forehead. Kai smiled and watched as Heero kissed Duo passionately. Then the wing pilot left. Duo closed the door behind him and turned out the lights. Kai pretended to be asleep. Really, she watched as Duo changed into his night clothes. Sometimes Kai wished that she had choose Quatre to be the girl. It would have been less distracting.

Heero knocked on the door and then opened it. He was surprised to find that Duo was the only one in the room. He walked in and closed the door.

"Where's Kai?" Heero asked. Duo shrugged as he put on his school uniform.

"She mumbled something about pratice, but I didn't catch all of it." Duo said.

"She's been praticing a lot lately. I wonder what she's up to." Heero said.

"Hm, I hope she gets it out of her system. It's really lonely in here without her." Duo said.

"Come on, baka. Or we'll be late for class." Heero said. The two walked out of the room.

Kai stood alone in a pratice room, staring at her music. She had worked day and night composing the piece and now she was going to enter it into a competition. The piano part was the easiest part to deal with, it was the viola solo that she had trouble with. Though, she didn't mind. It kept her mind off of her thoughts. She knew she loved the braided baka, but she was too afraid to act on her feelings. Heero was always telling her that he wouldn't mind, she needed Duo more than he did. Kai smiled to herself. Heero, once the 'Perfect Soldier' crap was broken, he became a very sweet and loving person. The only things he thought about was her and Duo, the two people he loved.

"I'm finally done with this. Now all I have to do is get someone to play the piano part. Hm, who would do it for me?" Kai said. She looked down at her watch. "Oh, shit. I'm going to be late for class." Kai quickly packed up her instrument and ran out of the room

"Settle down. Class will start in just a minute." Ms. Nyln said. Just then Kai ran into the room and straight to her seat. After sitting down, she sighed in relief.

"Great timing, Kai." Quatre said. Kai smiled and turned her attention to the teacher.

"I'm so glad that you've joined us today, Kathlene." Ms. Nyln said. Kai smiled.

"I'm just so anxious to excell in my school work." Kai said. Quatre laughed under his breath. Kai always was almost late for class, and she was at least three weeks ahead of the class. Ms. Nyln was getting tired of her.

"Thank you very much for you ethusasium, Kathlene. Now, everyone else, open your books to where we left off yesterday." Ms. Nyln said.

Usually, the six of them met on the roof of the school for lunch. As usual, Kai and Wufei had already gotten their lunch and sat down. Heero and Duo would join them shortly and Trowa and Quatre would be the last ones there. Kai sat looking at the school yard. There were girls swooning over the boys. Kai didn't appear to be swooning, but she was. No one knew but Heero. Kai looked up and saw Quatre and Trowa joining the group. A thought came to her.

"Hey Quatre. What are you doing after school?" Kai asked. Quatre shrugged.

"Nothing really. Just trying to catch up to you." Quatre said. Kai laughed.

"Can you meet me in the pratice hall?" Kai asked.

"Sure." Quatre answered. Kai stood up and started to walk away.

"Where are you going?" Heero said.

"I'm going to take a walk." Kai said. Duo jumped up. Amazingly, his skirt didn't fly up over his head.

"I'll go with you." Duo said. Kai was about to objected when Heero smiled at her and winked.

"Alright. Let's go, Dianna." Kai laughed. Duo bounced alongside her.

"So what have you been working on?" Duo asked. Kai sighed.

"When I was little, I use to compose music. I was well known for it. I've been working hard on a new piece. It's just something to get my mind off of things." Kai said.

"Like what?" Duo asked.

"Life, the war, home. Things like that." Kai said.

"Hm, does it work?" Duo asked.

"Most of the time." Kai answered. She really wished Duo wouldn't press on this subject anymore.

"So are you entering it in the contest next week?" Duo asked. Kai smiled.

"Yeah, I'm hoping Quatre will play the piano part to it." Kai said.

"What are the other parts?" Duo asked.

"It's a viola solo." Kai said. Duo frowned.

"Why the viola? It's such a dull instrument." Duo complained.

"Well, I like it's mellow tone. A violin would have been too high pitched and a cello too low. Besides, I excell the most on the viola. It was my second instrument, after the piano." Kai explained.

"What will happen if you win?" Duo asked.

"It'll get published and played by great musicians." Kai said hopefully. Duo noticed the shine in her eyes. Music was something she loved a lot.

"Perhaps, if you ever have time, you can compose a piece that uses a violin, viola, cello, bass and flute. I'm sure we'd all help you. I'm sure it would sound great." Duo boasted. Kai smiled. She liked the way Duo would build her up to be the greatest person he knew, but sometimes she wished he wouldn't. Sometimes heartbreak can kill a person, inside and out.

"Maybe. Depends on how well this one does. I'll catch you later, Dianna." Kai said. Before she left, Kai brushed her lips on Duo's cheek.

Duo sat on his bed, working on his homework. Heero was in the room, working on his laptop. Heero kept Duo company until Kai returned. Duo wasn't the sort that liked being alone. It had only been three hours after school when Kai walked into the room. Duo looked up from Heero's laptop and smiled.

"Well?" Duo asked. Kai smiled and plopped down on her bed.

"He said he would do it. The piano parts not that hard. It's the solo I have to work on." Kai said.

"Need to pratice in front of people?" Heero asked. Kai smiled.

"If you insist. I would hate to tear you away from your laptop." Kai laughed. Duo laughed too. It seemed like Kai was the only one who could get Heero away from his laptop long enough to be human.

"Yeah. Play for us, Kai." Duo begged. Kai smiled and took out her instrument. When she had it tuned, she started to play the solo. Both Heero and Duo were captivated by the beautiful sounds of the solo. Kai didn't noticed. She was playing from memory, so she had her eyes shut. Kai ended the song and opened her eyes.

"Well, what do you think?" Kai asked. The two sat speechless.

"Where did you learn how to play like that?" Duo said. Kai smiled.

"From home. I'm just trying to keep my beliefs alive." Kai said. She put the instrument up. Heero got up and headed for the door.

"I've got to be going. I'll see you guys later." Heero said as he opened the door and walked out. Duo sighed.

"I'm sure you'll do great, Kai. It sounds great." Duo said.

"Thanks Duo." Kai said.

"So when's the competition?" Duo asked. Kai sighed.

"Tommorrow afternoon." Kai wiped the sweat from her face. Duo looked at her in shock.

"You're bleeding." Duo said. Kai looked down at her hands and noticed that her left hand was bleeding. Each finger had been cut open by the strings of her viola.

"It's nothing. It'll heal." Kai said. Duo shook his head. He walked over to her with his first-aide kit. He banaged her fingers and started to wipe the blood from her face.

"Maybe you should just relax right now. You've been praticing too much." Duo said. Kai looked into his violet eyes. They were filled with kindness, just as they always were. Duo lend towards her, about to kiss her. Kai panicked. She pushed Duo away and went to the bathroom, locking the door. That was too close. That was the last thing she needed nawing on her mind. Once Duo kissed her, she would do anything just for him to touch her. She did it with Heero. Kai just didn't like feeling so helpless.

Duo sighed. What was it about him she didn't like? Everytime he tried to make a small advance on her, she would dissappear. She had become so shy around him recently. She would change in the bathroom and lock the door when she took a shower. She had never done that before, but then before she wasn't in love with him. Duo sighed again and went to bed. After a while Kai also went to bed.

"Don't worry Kai. I'm sure that we'll knock his socks off." Quatre assured her. Kai smiled and took in a deep breath. She was very nervous, but hopefully it would wear away.

"Next composer is Kathlene Mai. Her piece is called 'Overwhelming Pain.' It's a viola solo which she will be playing, accompanied by Quentin Ray on the piano." The announcer said. The judge looked up and Quatre cracked his knuckles.

"Ready when you are, Kai." Quatre said. Kai nodded. She closed her eyes and started to play. Quatre could feel that she was doing very well. In fact, this might be a difficult piece for anyone else, because it would take someone forever to work out the trills and chords right. Quatre would look up at the judge, who was captivated by the music. Quatre knew that Kai had won. There was no doubt about it.

"Thank you Miss Mai." The judge said when Kai finished. She bowed and walked off the stage. Quatre patted her on the back.

"You did great. I'm sure that you got it." Quatre said.

"Really? Ya think so?" Kai asked. Quatre nodded.

"Definately. I've got to go. I'll catch up with you later." Quatre said. He smiled and then walked away. Kai smiled and walked over to the announcer's assistant.

"Can I help you?" The girl asked.

"Yeah, I was wondering if my results were back." Kai said.

"What's your name?" The girl asked.

"Kathlene Mai." Kai said. The girl thumbed threw the paper and pulled one out.

"Here ya go. Have a nice day." The girl said. Kai smiled and walked away. She didn't look at the paper until she was in her room. Then she looked down at the rating she got. She nearly passed out. She couldn't believe it. The judge had given her a II. She didn't even bother looking at his explanation. She balled up the paper and threw across the room.

Duo walked into his room and stood in shock. The room was a mess, and it wasn't even his. There was sheet music torn and thrown all over the place. Duo noticed a green ball of paper and openned it up. It was her competition paper. He read over it. The judge said that the piece was beautiful, yet it seemed like she would be the only one to play it. Then there was a II at the bottom of the page. Duo sighed.

"I'm so sorry Kai. You must be heartbroken." Duo said out loud. He then heard something coming from the bathroom. Balled up in the bathtub, covered in blood, was Kai. Her head was proped on her knees. Duo walked slow over to her. She didn't react to him coming closer to her. It was if she didn't even know he was there. Duo checked her pulse to find that it was very weak. Duo sat her up and looked at her face. Her stormy eyes had been closed and streeks in the blood on her face indicated that she had been crying.

Duo undressed her and ran a bath. He washed the dried blood from her hair and body. It was a sad job, but he knew he had to do it or else she wouldn't make it. While cleaning her, Duo noticed the source of the bleed was on both of her arms. There were two huge cuts on each arm. They were still bleeding, which made his job harder.

Finally, Duo had managed to clean up all the blood and got her dressed. Duo picked her up and carried her to her bed. Duo brushed her long, red hair and quickly braided it. Then he took out his bandges and started to bandage her arms. Suddenly there was a knock on the door. Duo quickly tucked Kai into her bed, making it look like she was asleep. He then quickly picked up the paper and opened the door.

"Hey Duo. Is Kai in?" Quatre asked. Duo looked back at the female pilot. She looked like she was asleep.

"Yeah. She's very tired though. She came in a couple of hours ago and went to sleep." Duo lied. Quatre nodded. He knew that Duo was lying, but he knew there had to be a good explanation for it.

"Well, I just talk to her tommorrow then. See ya later, Duo." Quatre said as he walked off. Duo sighed and closed the door. He walked over to Kai, lying on her bed. He sat down next to her and brushed her bangs off her her forehead. Duo sighed. He lended over and brushed his lips on hers.

"Don't die on me, Kai. You mean too much to me to die now." Duo said. He held her hand. "I'm going to take care of you. I'm going to make sure you get better. I won't let you die like this. If you are to die anytime soon, it should be in battle." Duo pulled a chair next to her bed and sat down. He stayed by her side all night.

Heero knocked on the door. Before he could open it, Duo popped out, fully dressed, ready for school. Heero looked at him questionably.

"Did Kai already leave?" Heero asked. Duo looked at the door and shook his head.

"She isn't feeling very well today. She wanted to stay in bed." Duo lied. Heero looked into Duo's violet eyes. Heero could see the redness and water in those pools of violet. Something had happen last night, but he didn't want to press the matter anymore than it was.

"Well I hope she feels better tomorrow. Do you know how she did yesterday?" Heero asked. Duo shrugged.

"When I got home, she was asleep. Since she isn't feeling well, I didn't want to bother her with it." Duo said. Heero nodded.

"Come on, lets get to class." Heero said and the two headed to their class.

"Kathlene Mai? Does anyone know where she is today?" Ms. Nyln asked . Duo stood up.

"Kathlene wasn't feeling well this morning and decided to stay in bed today." Duo said.

"Well, that's a load off my back. I hope she takes the week off. Thank you Dianna." Ms. Nyln said. "Now class before we get to our test today....." Duo stopped listening to the woman. He kept on thinking about how Kai must have felt when she read the score.

"It just seems so empty without Kai here." Quatre said. Trowa nodded.

"So she didn't even wake up this morning, Duo?" Trowa asked. Duo smiled to himself. Of all the pilots, Trowa was thought to really be her brother. They fought and cared about each other so much that it was hard to tell that they weren't brother and sister.

"She was awake for a few minutes. She said she wasn't feeling well and she didn't feel like going to class. Then she went back to sleep." Duo said. Heero glared at Duo. He was hiding something and Heero was going to find out what.

"Anything we can do to help her, Maxwell?" Wufei asked. Duo shook his head.

"All she needs is some rest. That's all." Duo said. He got up and started to walk away.

"Were are you going?" Heero asked. Duo stopped.

"I'm going to see if she's up to eating." Duo said. Heero got up and walked over to him.

"I'll go with you." Heero said. Duo was about to say something, but decided not to.

Duo cracked the door opened and Heero pushed it the rest of the way. Duo turned a looked straight into Heero's glaring eyes.

"What?" Duo asked. Heero pushed Duo aside and knelt down next to Kai. He placed a hand on her head. She was burning up.

"Duo, was she really up this morning?" Heero asked. Duo shook his head.

"She's been out like a light since last night." Duo said.

"Well, she's burning up. If she doesn't get help soon, she may die." Heero said. Duo sighed.

"We have to try all we can before we take her anywhere." Duo said. Heero turned and looked at the American boy.

"Why?" Heero said. Duo sighed and slid Kai's blanket to her waist. Heero looked at the bandages that were wrapped around each wrist.

"I don't think people are going to first think she's sucidal. They're going to place the blame on one of us." Duo said. Heero sighed. He walked over to Kai's duffle bag and pulled out a bottle.

"I think this is why she has the fever. She hasn't taken one for a day now. We have to give it to her." Heero said.

"Heero? Duo?" Kai's weak voice said. Both jumped to her side.

"Are you ok, Kai?" Duo asked. Kai tried to smile, but she couldn't.

"Not really." Kai tried to move, but her body wasn't responding. "I-I can't move. What's going on?"

"You've come down with a bad fever. I hope this will help you." Heero said as he place a pill in her mouth. She managed to swallow the pill. Duo sat her up and placed a glass of water to her lips. She managed to drink the water and she closed her eyes.

"Heero, is she going to be ok?" Duo asked. He placed her head back on her pillow.

"I hope so." Heero said as he placed a washcloth on Kai's forehead. "You may want to stay with her tommorrow. I'll cover for you." Heero walked towards the door. "Try to get her to eat something."

"Ok." Duo said. Heero opened the door and walked out. Duo sighed. "Oh, Kai. What's going to happen to make this worst?"

Kai opened her eyes. She was amazed that she was able to sit up. She noticed that Duo was asleep on the chair next to her bed. She smiled and swung her feet off the bed and stood up. She looked down at herself. She noticed that she had bandages on her arms. Then she frowned. She remembered what she did to herself and then thought about what Duo must've gone through to take care of her.

"Oh, I'm so sorry Duo. You must be exausted." Kai said as she placed a blanket around Duo. Then there was a soft knock on the door. Then Heero walked in.

"You're awake." Heero said. Kai smiled and picked up the bottle of pills.

"Yeah. I'm sorry I got you two involved. I don't take rejection very well." Kai said. She took one of the pills.

"What is that for?" Heero asked. Kai smiled.

"You see, I'm not use to being so close to the sun. These make up the difference." Kai said.

"Well I was bring Duo something to eat, I didn''t..." Heero started to say.

"Don't worry about it Heero. I'm fine now. I just hope that I didn't wear poor Duo down." Kai said. Heero walked over to Kai and put his arms around her.

"It gave him something to think about. It was somewhat of a good thing, but it made us all worry. About both him and you." Heero said. He smiled.

"I'm so sorry. I didn't mean to make you guys worry. I didn't even question the judge's rating. If I had, maybe none of this would have happened." Kai cried. Heero pulled her down as he sat on Duo's bed.

"I know what happened. I'm surprised but not shocked. The judge said it was a beautiful piece but he thought it would be too hard for another person to play it. I'm sure that you can play it for people after the war is over." Heero said. He had hoped that Kai would calm down and she did. Kai sighed and lend into the Japanese boy.

"Yeah, if we're all still alive." Kai said. Heero looked down a the red haired girl in his arms. He had to amit that the girl had made a lasting impression on him. Unlike Relena or other girls he knew, Kai wasn't as demanding in a relationship. Yes, Heero and Kai had something going on between them.

"Of course we will be. As long as we know that what we're doing is right." Heero said. Kai laughed.

"You've been around Wufei too much." Kai said. Heero smiled and kissed her on her forehead.

"Well, I have to go. Take care of Dianna for me." Heero got up and walked out the door. Kai sighed and watched Duo sleep.

"How's she doing, Heero?" Trowa asked as the japanese boy joined the other pilots.

"She's doing better now." Heero said.

"Do you know what was wrong?" Quatre asked.

"She didn't take something." Heero said. Quatre looked at the japanese boy funny.

"Oh, I forgot. She takes temperature pills to prevent overheating." Trowa said.

"Overheating? What are you talking about, Trowa?" Wufei asked.

"She's not use to sunlight or the heat that it produces." Trowa explained.

"That would explain why she had a fever." Heero said. "I'm surprised, Trowa. Even though she hit you with her hairbrush, you still care deeply about her." Wufei said. Quatre frowned and looked to his lover.

"Yeah, why is that?" Quatre asked.

"We all see her in a different way. I see her as the sister I never thought I had. She's one of my many reasons for fighting." Trowa answered.

Kai hadn't realized how light Duo really was. She was able to put him on her bed. She placed him on her lap and she continued to watch him sleep. Kai brushed his long bangs off his face to see his violet eyes openning up. Duo sat up and looked at her.

"Hey, are you ok?" Duo asked. Kai nodded.

"I'm going to be fine, Duo. Thanks for taking care of me." Kai lend over to Duo and kissed him on his cheek.

"It was no problem." Duo said. Kai sighed.

"I'm sure it was. You had to clean up all the blood and make sure that everyone doesn't get worried. You look really tired Duo." Kai said. Duo smiled and placed a hand on her cheek. Kai was about to head for the bathroom when Duo grabbed her arm.

"Why? Why do you continue to tease me like this?" Duo said. Kai looked into his violet eyes.

"I don't want to be helpless. I don't mean to tease you, Duo. But I just don't......" Kai started to cry. She couldn't help it. Duo sat next to her and wrapped his arms around her. Immediately, Kai baried her face into Duo. Duo let her cry.

"I can't see you being helpless. You're the strongest person I know, Kai. If anyone is made helpless, it would be us, being without you." Duo said. Kai looked up at Duo.

"But that's how I feel though, towards Heero. I feel so empty if I'm not near him or if he doesn't touch me. It's a feeling I hate to have, but it knaws on me all the time." Kai said. Duo lifted her chin and lowered his face down to her.

"I'll always be here for you. All you have to do is ask." Duo said. Before she could do anything, Duo pressed his lips against her's. Instead of pushing him away like he thought she would, Kai wrapped her arms around him and pulled him close to her. Duo was surprised that she wanted this as much as he did.

"I'm asking, Duo." Kai said when she broke away so both of them could breath. She pulled him down to her and kissed him back. Kai broke away from him and took down her long, red hair. Duo brushed her bangs out of her face and lets his hand fall down, taking off any clothing that his hand came in contact with.

Soon, both were undress and caressing each others bodies. Duo pressed Kai down on her bed as he kissed her again. Kai wrapped her arms around Duo's neck. Duo held one hand on the back of Kai's head and the other hand caressed and groped on every curve on Kai's body. Kai moaned with every movement of Duo's wandering hand. Duo looked down at his female lover. She smiled up at him as he caressed her face. The ends of his now unbraided hair brushed against her bare pale skin. Duo then lowered himself on her. Kai wrapped her arms around him again and kissed him passionately.

Kai knew that she might regret every second of this night, but she wouldn't forget it. It may have been Duo's first time with a female lover, but it wasn't her first or second. Yet Duo was the only lover who had managed to win her body, mind and soul within a single kiss. Kai knew that she couldn't let Duo go, not even if it meant her death. Nothing would take him away from her without killing her first.

Kai openned her eyes. She started to spit out hair. She wasn't sure if it was her's or the warm body she had given herself to. A hand suddenly brushed all the hair from her face. Kai looked up into a pair of huge, warm, violet eyes. Kai smiled and pulled herself closer to the pilot who had won her over.

"Morning Kai." Duo said. Kai sighed. It was morning already. That meant that they would have to get up and go to class. She didn't even want to move, knowing she would be away from him.

"I hate the morning. Are you sure it's not a bright moonlight, Duo?" Kai said grumply. Duo laughed and wrapped his arms around her.

"Don't worry. Heero said he would tell the teacher that I caught what you have. I'm sure that will be much better." Duo said. Kai smiled and pressed her lips to his, bruising it with her kiss.

"Then perhaps I'll learn to enjoy mornings, huh?" Kai asked. Duo kissed her back and then grinned happily.

"I'm sure you'll find that this morning will be more than enjoyable." Duo said. Kai smiled and kissed him again. They continued to indulge themselves in their passions and lust. Their love was so mind blowing that Kai forgot about her "overwhelming pain." Duo took it away from her mind and replaced it with the love they shared. Hopefully the love will last forever.
