Princess Kryla

Part 3

It was a grand ball. Everyone wore large masks that made it impossible to tell who was behind it. Kai stood in the shadows alone. She didn't want to take a chance. Millardo was somewhere in the room and it seemed that he could find her just by smelling the air.

Kai brushed her long blood red hair out of her face. Because of Earth's graviational pull, Kai had to appear in her real form and wear glasses. Her skin, unfotunately, was still very pale.

She watched as the people waltzed around the ballroom. She really wished she was part of that world, but because of recent events, she would never be able to. Her hands constantly pulled at the white lace that incircled the skirt of her dark green ball dress. Since she took on her title of princess, Kai had to wear these silly dresses. Neshia suddenly appeared in front of her.

"Ky, get out there and grace us with your presences or I will take your mask off and then throw you out there." Neshia demanded.

Kai nodded and walked along side her older sister. A man took Neshia's hand and they started dancing. Kai wondered why her sister made her miserible. Now she had to be seen watching everyone having a good time.

"May I have this dance, Princess?" A tall man said. Kai looked into the guy's blue eyes as she took his hand. He seemed familar, but she couldn't figure it out. Suddenly he pulled her close.

"You still don't know who I am, Princess?" The guy asked. Kai looked started to look deep into his blue eyes. It reminded her of Zechs' eyes.

"Millardo?" Kai whispered. He nodded. She then noticed his long, silky blonde hair. Kai wrapped her arms around him and place her head on his shoulder.

"I've missed you, Kai. I was starting to doubt that I would see you again. I'm sure that your sister wouldn't..." Millardo started. Kai put her hand on his mouth and shook her head.

"Don't even say it. I doubt I will be here much longer. I want to live on my own for awhile. I've never lived the life of a princess, nor do I look foward to it. All my life, I was handed everything. I haven't earned anything but freedom. I left the pilots to find my sister. Now I will leave her to find myself. I'll do it by myself." Kai explained. Millardo nodded and kissed her hand.

"I only hope you find yourself as apealing as I do. You are the sort who will always end up in the same situtation. I guess I'll leave you be for now." Millardo said. He bowed to her and walked away.

"Why do you have to be so nice, Millardo? It would be so much easier." Kai said as she watched him disappear in the crowd. Then someone else touched her hand. She turned to face a young man with a long chestnut colored braid.

"May I have this dance?" The man said. She took his hand and they started to dance. She noticed that how cold he was. She pulled him close, hoping he would take in some of her heat.

'Duo, why are you so cold?' Kai asked the American pilot. ' I think it's because I use my engery to talk and be active that I don't have enough to heat myself.' Duo laughed. Kai pulled him close to her.

"Oh, Duo. You're always so cold." Kai mumbled. She placed her head on the guy's shoulder. The guy looked down at her.

"How does she know my name? Could she be Princess Krlya?" The guy asked himself. Kai's hand brushed over his braid. It felt familiar as well. Kai felt very safe and warm, dispite the fact he was an icicle. She looked into his eyes and saw a familiar shine in his violet eyes.

"Duo?" Kai asked. They both stopped. The guy looked into her stormy blue eyes. He placed his hand in her blood red hair.

"How do you know my name?" Duo asked. He only reconized her eyes. He wasn't quite sure if this red haired beauty was the missing gundam pilot. She place a warm hand on Duo's face.

"This is my true form, Duo. I know you can see it. My eyes seem a little glossy, but that's because I'm wearing glasses. My hair is longer and red, but it's still me." Kai said. Duo touched the warm hand on his face.

"Kai? Is that really you?" The American pilot asked. Kai nodded. They both looked around and noticed that everyone was still dancing. They too continued to dance. Without knowing it, the two glided out of sight. They stopped and looked at each. Duo place one of his cold hands on her face. Kai took his hand off. She smiled at him

"It's been awhile, Duo. How have the others been holding up?" Kai asked. Duo turned away from her.

"They're all still pretty lost without you. The place isn't the same without you. Wufei went back to being quiet, Trowa took up reading again, Quatre seems sadder than usual, and Heero just has been the same without you there challeneging him." Duo said. Kai sighed.

"I know how they feel." Kai said. Duo turned to face the red haired pilot.

"You do? Really?" Duo asked.

"I use to tease Wufei just to have something to do. You spent most of your time trying to get Heero off the computer and Trowa and Quatre would be off in their own world. I miss all of you terrible. But I just have to live with it." Kai said.

"What do you mean?" Duo asked. Kai sighed. He was just like Millardo, wanting to know everything.

"I'm tired of being a princess." Kai said.

"But it's what you are. No matter what." Duo said.

Kai smiled. "Yeah, but that means I have no freedom. I've fought all my life. Ever since I was little, I fought so other may live with freedom. Never had I really experinced the duties of princess. I was three when I was placed into the battlefield. When Zechs and Treize came to my planet, my planet had just achieved peace. I was taken into captivity, and was given everything. I've never earned anything before. Now that I'm with my sister, I've realized that I really need to find what's in me. I really don't understand what I'm supposed to be doing here. After this ball is over and my sister crowned queen, I'm going to one of the colonies or maybe Earth to live like a normal person." Kai explained.

Duo looked into her stormy blue eyes. "Normal? You'd give all this up, which you've earned, to be normal?" Duo asked.

Kai's eyes started to water. "Duo, you had a life of freedom and normality before you became a gundam pilot, didn't you?" Kai asked.

"Some what, yeah." Duo said.

"I have never felt what freedom really is. Being a princess made seem to be quite a life, but there is only so much you can do. How would you feel if you were forced to live a life where all the things you want to do will disgrace your family?" Kai said.

"I'd feel like I was in a prison or something." The American pilot responded.

"That's how I feel. I want to feel life alone. I don't know how long it might be, but I have to take it." Kai said. A tear fell from her eye. Duo brushed it away from her cheek.

"What happens if the life you're looking for isn't what you want?" Duo asked.

"I don't know. I guess I just have to keep living it. It's better than letting my sister whom I have to marry. She's already got a list. I have a feeling that it'll be her first choice that I have to live with." Kai said.

"Why does it matter who you marry?" Duo asked. Kai laughed, wiping tears from her eyes.

"Well, if I marry a royal, or popular person from Earth, it will create an alliance. I know that whom ever I marry, if I do, will be from Earth." Kai stopped. Duo looked into her eyes. Her tears where streaming down her face. Duo reached to wipe them away, but she turned and ran away. Duo simple watched her leave.

"I understand. Just know that I'll always open my heart to you." Duo said as he returned to the ball.

"I'm leaving now. I'll tell my sister later. I need to get away from all this. I've fought for their freedom and peace. Now it's my turn to feel what it feels to live on my own." Kai gathered her things and walked out of the palace.

She took off her black ribbon and took off in the Masquerader. Noting by the lack of response to her sudden take off, she had left unnoticed. It made it easier. She would send a message to her sister later. She didn't want to incounter another pilot
