"What do you mean, Heero?" Duo asked as he sat down next to Heero.
"I think she was saying goodbye to you, because you may not be alive in the morning." Heero said. Duo sighed and laid down on the bed.
"Hm, so I guess she wanted me to know she knew. She's a smart girl alright. I think she gets it from Kai." Duo said. Heero laid down next to Duo and pulled him close to him. Heero wanted to think that his hold on Duo would keep him from dying, but he was lying to himself.
"Yeah, she does." Heero said quietly.
"Heero?" Duo said.
"Hm?" Heero responded.
"I want you to take care of Kai and Kay for me." Duo said. Heero looked down at Duo.
"What?" Heero asked. Duo looked Heero in the eye.
"I don't want Kai to raise Kay by herself, Heero. I want Kay to be happy too." Duo said. Heero shook his head.
"I don't want to take your place with them." Heero said. Duo shook his head.
"I know you don't, but I want you to take on a bigger role in their lives. Both of them love you as much as they love me. I know you feel the same way about them. I want you to make sure that Kay has a good family." Duo said. Heero shook his head.
"I don't understand what you mean, Duo." Heero said.
"I want Kay to have both a mother and a father. She's told me before that she wanted you to be her father once I die. She knew that you would love her as much as I do. I want that." Duo said.
"But I don't think..." Heero said.
"Stop thinking Heero and just act on how you feel. You were the one that taught me that. Now you won't do it yourself. Please promise me you'll take care of them." Duo said. Heero nodded his head.
"I promise." Heero said.
Kai couldn't sleep. There was something gnawing on the back of her mind. She just didn't know what it was and it wasn't allowing her to sleep. Kai got up and sat on the couch in the livingroom. The house was so quiet, for once. Usually, if they were all close like this, you could hear what everyone was doing in their rooms. Yet that night, it was strangely quiet. Kai curled up in a blanket and quietly turned on the tv. There wasn't much on at two in the morning, but it kept Kai's mind busy.
"Mommy?" Kay said as she stumbled into the livingroom. Kai got up and picked up Kay.
"What are you doing up, baby? You need to go back to bed." Kai said. Kay shook her head and buried her face into Kai's chest. "What's wrong, baby?"
"Mommy, Daddy's going to die now." Kay cried softly. Kai carried Kay over to the couch and sat down.
"No he's not." Kai said, hoping to convince Kay and herself.
"But I know that he is." Kay said. Kai smiled sadly down at her child.
"Hush now. Try and get some sleep. I'm sure your father will be here when you wake up." Kai said. Kay nodded and closed her eyes. Kai stroked Kay's head as she slept. It was the only thing she could do to keep herself from crying. Kai hoped that it was just a bad feeling and not something really bad.
Heero's eyes hardened as he walked out of his room he shared with Duo. He walked into the kitchen and poured himself a cup of coffee. Trowa and Quatre were still cleaning off the table from the pervious night. Heero would have laughed to himself if he wasn't so sad. Quatre looked up at Heero and smiled.
"Well, I guess now that almost everyone is up, I'll make breakfest." Quatre said. Heero grunted.
"Who isn't up?" Heero asked. Quatre smiled again and nodded towards the livingroom.
"Kai and Kay are still sleeping." Quatre said. Trowa took out six big plates and a small one for Kay. Heero picked up one of the big plates and threw it to the ground.
"Heero? What...?" Trowa asked.
"The is no need for a sixth big plate." Heero said. Suddenly Kai's door was slammed shut. Quatre ran to Duo's room and saw that Death had died. Quatre cried and Trowa held him. Heero couldn't help but walk into Kai's room.
"Kai?" Heero said timidly. Kai shook her head.
"I had a feeling that this was going to happen now. I almost convinced myself that everything was going to be fine. Now I'm a mess. I thought I had excepted his death, but I didn't." Kai said. Heero sat down next to her and put an arm around her.
"That's how everyone feels right now. We didn't know that today would be the day." Heero said. Kai nodded and rested her head on Heero's shoulder.
"I know I have to except it again, but I think it'll be hard on Kay as well." Kai said. Heero pulled her close to him. He couldn't help but notice that it felt the same way holding her as it did holding Duo. Maybe it won't be such a big change have all.
"I don't think so. I'm sure she won't forget Duo, but it won't be hard on her." Heero said. Kai looked up at him.
"What do you mean? She won't have a father." Kai asked. Heero smiled and shoke his head.
"Duo said something to me that made me think. He wanted me to take care of you two. I want to, but I couldn't think of any way I could. Then a thought came to me. I was hoping that Duo wouldn't die so we might get married or something. But I think this ring would suit better on your finger." Heero said as he placed a ring on her finger. Kai watched as he placed it on her finger, still a little confused on what Heero was trying to tell her.
"I don't understand." Kai said. Heero smiled down at her.
"But I know you will." Heero said as he kissed her pasionately. Kai finally got what he meant and fell deep into the kiss.
"Well, Trowa was right. This may not be the ending that I wanted, but it's still happy." Kai thought to herself.
The funeral was as excepted, very sad. Many that attended knew that this day would come, but they just didn't except to be today. Trowa held Quatre as he cried. Trowa tried to comfort the blonde. It was just that all of them had thought that Duo was going to pull through after all. Kai was holding Kay quietly in the back of the room. She hadn't said much since that morning. No one wanted to push her, so they let her be silent. Wufei stood in the back of the room, hoping no one would see him. He was trying very hard to hold back the tears that wanted so much to fall down his face. Heero stood in front of everyone, about to give Duo eulogy.
"Some thought of him as a carefree person, yet he was a very caring person. He was a true and loyal friend to all of those who cared about him. In his dying days, he was the perfect father to his daughter, who he has unfortunately left behind. His friends and family saw how he fought during the war. He was never afraid of death. He called himself the god of death and lived up to his name. He lived his life to the fullest. He never regreted anything he's done in his life. In his dying days, Duo gave us all memories we will never forget, and we will never forget him." Heero said. He turned to the casket and placed his hand on Duo's cold dead hand. Then he turned and walked out of the room.
The day was bright and cheery, despite the fact that it was one of the sadest days in anyone's life. Those who had been touched by Duo felt a great emptiness in their hearts. Yet everyone knew that they had to move on and hold on to the memories that Duo had given them.
Heero watched as Trowa played with Kay at the park. Quatre sat on the swing set watching Trowa getting hit by a mud pie. Wufei was helping Kay make mud pies, while she threw them at Trowa. Heero smiled and turned to Kai, who was holding her son, Duo Maxwell Yuy. Heero lend over and kissed little Duo on the forehead. Then he kissed Kai.
"Hm, it's amazing what a year can do to people." Kai said. Heero nodded.
"Yeah. Ever since Duo was born, Kay seems to be getting better." Heero said. Kai smiled.
"Yeah, I just hope that he will be as joy giving as his namesake. It will be nice to have the house full of laughter again." Kai said. Heero laughed as Quatre screamed. Kay, Trowa and Wufei had thrown a bucket of mud on him.
"Uh, what did you do that for?" Quatre asked. Kay laughed.
"Didn't want you to feel left out." Kay laughed. Quatre got up and glared at her.
"I'm going to give you a five second head start before I get you back." Quatre said. Kay laughed louder and ran. Quatre filled the bucket up with mud and chased after her. Trowa and Wufei sat back and watched.
Heero and Kai laughed. Kay looked happier than she had all year. After her father died, she went into a depression. Then when her brother was born, she seemed to have lighten up. Now she was back to her normal mischievous self.
"Duo would love to see this moment." Heero said. Kai smiled and looked up to the sky.
"I think it's more of being here to help. He can see her and all of us. He just can't be apart of it. That's the only thing bad about death." Kai said. Heero nodded.
"I guess it's your turn to give her a bath." Heero said.
"I don't think so, Heero. I gave her a bath yesterday. And besides...." Kai said. Her pause made Heero turn towards her. There was a bucket of mud heading straight for him. It mud found it's way onto his head and down his body. "You're going to be taking a bath too."
"Well, so are you." Heero said as he chased Kai with the bucket. She ran down towards the swing set. There was no way she was going to get dirty, especially with Duo in her arms. Heero managed to corner her.
"Hold on, Heero. You don't want to get Duo dirty, do you?" Kai asked. Heero stopped. Then from behind, Trowa took Duo from her and Heero dumped the mud on her.
"Ah, I'll get you for this, Heero." Kai said as she lunged foward, knocking Heero down into the mud. Everyone laughed as Kai pinned Heero down. "Now tell me, who's giving Kay a bath?"
"I will." Heero said. Kai got up and moved quickly out of the mud, hoping not to be knocked back in.
"Alright, I think it's time we all go home and clean up." Quatre said. Everyone nodded and headed back home, the place where Duo had died. It was now a tradition to all meet up together. Not just to remember Duo, but to see Kay as well.
