A year has past since the day the six gundam pilots were reunited. Duo seemed to be better than expected. In fact, his doctor couldn't explain the reasons why he was still alive. According to his doctor, Duo should have died more than a year ago, but no one but Duo's close friends knew the reason why he was still alive. The little girl that was name Kathlene Dianna Maxwell.
Kay had become the star in each of the ex-pilots' lives. If anyone else had been there to see little Kay grow up into the one year old that she was, they too would feel touched by her sweetness. Even Heero, a person who had come to Duo to learn how to live, had fallen in love with her. She was loved by all that knew her well.
One day, Duo and Heero took Kay into the city to go shopping. It was the girl's first birthday and Duo wanted to get her something special. He was hoping that this would be one of many birthdays he would be with his daughter. The others were back at Duo's house, preparing for the party.
Yet, something about Kay was bothering Kai. The child had been very quiet that morning. She was hanging onto every word that came out of Duo's mouth. It seemed so strange. It was if Duo was never going to talk to her again. It distrubed Kai. What if it meant that Duo was going to die soon?
"Hey Kai." Trowa said. Kai turned and looked the taller man in the eyes.
"Hey Trowa. How's everything coming?" Kai asked.
"Everything is fine. Well, almost everything." Trowa said. He noticed that Kai's eyes were watering up. Recently Kai was getting emotional, but he wasn't sure about what.
"What do you mean, Trowa?" Kai asked. Trowa walked over to her and put a hand on her shoulder.
"You don't seemed to be with us today. I've noticed that during the past few days, you've been a little emotional." Trowa said. Kai shook her head.
"It's nothing to worry about, Trowa. It's something that comes along with being female. You get emotional when you realize that the child you've given birth to is growing up." Kai said. Trowa looked into her stormy blue eyes.
"That's not what's bothering you, Kai. Don't lie to me. I can tell that it has something to do with Duo." Trowa said. Kai shook her head.
"This has nothing to do with Duo. I'm over Duo completely." Kai said with tears streaming down her face. Trowa sighed and pulled her close to him.
"You have nothing to worry about, Kai. I'm sure everything will work out alright. You'll see. I mean, you managed to do the impossible. You got Heero to open up to Duo. I know that it still hurts you to know that they're together, but then sometime we all do things that hurt us inside and out. You did this so that Duo could be happy." Trowa said. Kai looked up into his emerald eyes.
"I really hope you're right, Trowa. I just have a bad feeling that Duo won't have the happy ending that I want him to." Kai said. Trowa shook his head.
"He already had his happy ending. Heero told him how he felt. That's enough for Duo and you know it. There's nothing more that Duo wants. I think he just wants you to have a happy ending for once. I've known you for a long time, Kai. But Duo knows you better than you know yourself. You may not get the ending you want, but it'll be a happy one, eventually." Trowa said.
"Yeah. I guess you're right." Kai said.
"I know I am. Now lets finish up getting the party ready." Trowa said. Kai nodded.
Kay ran up to the window of a toy store. She looked in at the toys in the window. There was a toy train going around all the toys in the display. In the middle of the display was a beautiful doll. On the train, was a cute, brown, blue eyed, teddy bear. Duo and Heero caught up to her and looked at what she was looking at.
"Hey Kay. You want to go in there?" Duo asked. Kay vigously nodded her head.
"Please Daddy?" Kay pleed. Duo smiled and nodded. The three of them walked into the store. Duo first thought that she would go look at the dolls, just like any little girl would, but she went to look at the teddy bears. There were many different types and colors. Heero walked over to her.
"What kind of bear are you looking for?" Heero asked. Kay shrugged.
"I guess any will be very special no matter what it looks like." Kay said. Then a saleperson walked over to her.
"Hi there, little one. Is there anything I can help you with?" The lady said. Kay nodded.
"I'm looking for a special bear." Kay said.
"What kind in particular?" The lady asked. Kay becked the woman to bend down. Then she whispered something in the woman's ear.
"Do you think you have one like that?" Kay asked. The lady smiled and nodded.
"Of course we do. If you will wait right here, I'll go get it for you." The lady said. She walked off. Kay stood with a smile on her face.
"What did you tell her?" Duo asked. Kay turned to Duo.
"You'll see." Kay said. The lady walked back towards them with a box in her hands.
"'I think you'll love this." The lady said. She opened the box to reveal exactly what Kay wanted. Duo and Heero stood in shock.
"That's what I want. Daddy, would you please buy it for me?" Kay asked. Duo nodded. There was no way he was going to say no to Kay. He didn't have the strength to. Duo paided for the bear and the three headed back home. Kay sat happily in the backseat with her bear, holding it like she protecting it from the world.
"I'm glad we found her something that she likes. I was starting to think we would never find anything." Heero said. Duo laughed. Kay gave her bear a big hug.
"Thank you Daddy. I bet this is the best present I'll ever get." Kay said. She snuggled up with it and dozed off to sleep. Duo looked back at her and smiled. She looked like a baby angel that had just gotten a teddy bear. In fact, that's what she was, his angel.
"I wonder what Kai will say when she sees that bear." Duo said. Heero shrugged.
"Who knows?" Heero said as they drove home.
Wufei stood in the doorway of the kitchen, watching Kai bake a cake. It had been a tough day for her. She seemed to feel that she just wasn't ready to realize that Kay was become a child, depending on herself instead of her mother. Well, that's what it seemed like it, but Wufei knew that it was something else. He could tell by watching her. She seemed sad and distant, but she just wouldn't tell anyone. Trowa didn't know exactly what was wrong with her.
"Hey Kai." Wufei said. It was strange, his relationship with her. He knowledged the other pilots by their last names, but he didn't want to walk around calling her Princess Krlya, so he called her Kai like she wanted to be call. Kai looked up from her mixing bowl.
"Hey Wufei. What's up?" Kai said with a forced happy cheer. Wufei knew she was faking her happiness. He wondered if her sadness had more to do with Duo's illness than Kay growing up.
"Nothing. I'm just wondering what kind of cake you're making." Wufei lied. Kai glared at him. Of all the pilots, Kai could see through a lie like water. It was amazing what she could see through. She even could force the truth out of Heero, who is 'Mr. Perfect Soldier.' He gave up on lying to her a long time ago. Quatre and Trowa didn't even bother lying to her. Wufei never really said much to her anyway, so he didn't have to worry about her seeing through his lies.
"It's a chocolate cake." Kai forced out without screaming. Kai just didn't want to be there anymore. It wasn't the fact that Duo was still very ill or Kay becoming more dependant. It was the fact that Kay was showing signs that Duo was going to die in a day or two. Kai had excepted the fact earlier, but now that everyone was starting to think that Duo was getting better. Now it was going to be harder on everyone.
"Hm, well I think Heero can tell that she likes chocolate." Wufei said, hoping to cheer Kai up. Kai slammed her mixing spoon onto the kitchen counter.
"Excuse me." Kai said as she pushed passed Wufei and ran into her. Once she was inside, she slamed the door behind her. Quatre walked into the kitchen.
"What happened, Wufei?" Quatre asked. Wufei shrugged.
"I don't know. I said something about Heero knowing about Kay's love for chocolate and she ran out." Wufei said. Quatre frowned and took up Kai's job of baking the cake. Wufei looked at Kai's door. It was strange how she had just ran out and slammed her door. Trowa put his hand on Wufei's shoulder.
"Leave her be, Wufei. She knows something is bothering her, but she doesn't want to take to time to realize what it is. I tried to help her and she blew me off. I'm just hoping that after today, she'll be back to normal." Trowa said. Wufei looked to Trowa and nodded.
"I hope your right, Barton." Wufei said.
"Hey! We're back!" Duo said. Trowa and Wufei were setting the table and Quatre was finishing up the cake when Heero, Duo and Kay walked in.
"Where's Kai?" Heero asked. Trowa nodded towards her door.
"She went in there a while ago." Trowa said. Heero walked towards her room, but Trowa put a hand on Heero's shoulder. "I think she needs sometime to be alone."
"She's been alone all day. It's time she spent sometime with her family." Heero said as he walked over to her door and opened it.
"Leave me alone Wufei. I know Quatre took over, so don't even say that." Kai said. Heero walked into the room and closed the door behind him. Kai had her back to the door, so she didn't know who really was in the room. In fact, she didn't even know that someone was in the room with her. Heero noticed that she was trembling. She sniffled a couple time before Heero sat next to her on the bed. Kai turned over and looked at him.
"I just wanted you to know we were back." Heero said. Kai turned over and put a pillow over her head.
"Thank you, Heero. Now get out." Kai said. Heero took the pillow from her and sat her up. Even though there wasn't any light in the room, Heero could see the redness in her eyes.
"Come on. This is Kay first birthday party. She'll want all of us here with her to celebrate." Heero said. Kai took in a deep breath. Then she wiped her eyes of tears.
"Alright." Kai said. Heero helped her up and opened the door for her. Heero watched Kai. She seemed more emotional now than she had been before they had left that morning. What had happened to do this to her?
Kai walked out into the livingroom and saw the bear her daughter was holding. It was a chestnut colored bear with big, violet eyes. There was no doubt that the bear's name was Duo.
"Look what Daddy and Heero bought me." Kay said. Kai smiled, perhaps she just overreacting. It seemed everything was going to be fine.
The party had gone great. It was a day none of them would forget. Kay had gotten into the cake early and there was chocolate all over the place. In fact, the only one that didn't get chocolate all over themselves was the bear, which was named Duo, of course. After Kay was cleaned and the house, everyone was getting ready for bed. Kay dragged her bear over to Duo's room. Duo looked at his daughter. She was so cute. Luck was smiling at him to have seen this much of her life so far. He smiled down at her. Kay forced a smile on her face.
"Goodnight, Kay. Goodnight Duo." Duo said as he kissed Kay and the bear on the head. Kay sniffled back a tear.
"Goodbye, Daddy." Kay said. Duo looked at his daughter.
"Huh?" Duo asked. Kay forced a bigger smile on her face.
"I mean, Goodnight." Kay said as she ran into her room and closed the door. Heero stood behind Duo. The child had said goodbye for a reason.
"That was weird." Duo said. Heero smiled sadly and closed the door.
"She a very smart child." Heero said.
"What do you mean, Heero?" Duo asked. Heero sat down on the bed and sighed.
"She seems to know what happens next." Heero said.
