The Japanese Canadian Cultural Centre's first martial arts program started
in 1963 by Sensei Kei Tsumura. Its qualified instructors and coaches have competed in all levels
of provincial, national and international tournaments.
In 1979 Shihan Kei Tsumura
was awarded his 6th-dan degree and became the first
North American holder of the official Shihan (Master's) degree issued from the
All Japan Shito-Ryu Itosu-Kai headquarters and presented by O'Sensei Ryusho
Sakagami. O'Sensei Sakagami's son, Sadaaki, 9th. Dan, is the current Soke of Shito-Ryu Itosu-Kai karate. Shihan Tsumura was awarded his 8th-dan degree by
Soke Sadaaki Sakagami in 1999.
After 37 years, the Club continues to flourish with a wide range of students:
men, women and children of all ages, maintaining the same high standards with
which it was launched back in1963.
