Miaka and Yui's Relationship

The friendship between Miaka and Yui seems to be one sided. Yui chan is usually the one to sacrifice on behalf of the friendship. She is even willing to go to a less prestigeous school just to be with Miaka. To understand the full gravity of the sacrifice, one must know that in Japan's modern day society, the senior high school can determine one's future. Being ten times more intelligent than Miaka, Yui can very easily enter a more prestigeous school for a more secure future. Yui's choice proves herself not only to be unselfish but noble.
      There is always a strong contrast between Yui and Miaka; all that is good goes to Miaka while all that is evil goes to Yui. Miaka's seishis' are all kind hearted and loving while Yui's are all either stupid, uncaring or minupulating. When Miaka is drawn again into the book, she ends up in the always sunny Koo Nan Gokku; Yui, however, ends up in the Seiryu's part which is always dark and raining.
Miaka always gets saved by someone nomatter what kind of mess she is in, but Yui is left to stand on her own. All of Miaka's good intendions always put her in a better position while all of Yui's always back fire on her. The writer is very unfair to her in that way as she lets the readers forget her sufferings by seeing things from the always crying Miaka's point of view. Feel strongly? No way.

The Characters
The background of most characters seem
quite unrealistic. It seems that the author wants to provided some kind of tragic, dark past for the characters but cannot find a fitting one. I do not find it credible that Chichiri will injure his own eye; it is very unlike him to do that. Neither can I see him killing his friend over a girl. He is too sweet and fun-loving to commit such a horrid crime. One might argue that that was what he was like in the past and that realizing that he was wrong, he repented and changed. If that is true, then...uh I have nothing to say. (But I'll think of something.)
     I also find it hard to believe the stuff about Tamahome and his family. It seems to me that Watase Yuu put that in and said, "uh...I hope the readers buy this." For one thing, it is totally against his image. I found it quite sappy, actually. And it also just so happens that Miaka is watching as Yuren falls sick. (Yeah. Whatever.) Plus I don't see why Tamahome's family members should like him so much. As the oldest son, he is supposed to be responsible for many things in the family--not just the income. He was supposed to be there to take care of the children and his sick father, not out adventuring with his lover. He is never around when needed, shows up once in a while with little toys, almost got the family killed (Vol. 3, Pg 38) when he goes home, and not to mention, shows up at home one day just to abandon the family to persue Miaka. I would hate such an irresponsible and selfish brother. Instead his family says, "go, don't worry, we love you, Itte ra shai..." and all the other stuff like that. Chuei probably says it just to get rid of him. Children remember only good things they receive from people. Tamahome might be out there getting the cash but they don't see that. All they see is that he causes a lot of trouble. Chuei is the one who is always there, not Tamahome.

Amiboshi and Suboshi

When Amiboshi is pretending to be Chiriko, he communicates by means of scratching messages on his fore arm. The damage done on his body automatically appears on Suboshi's body as well. (Ignoring the little clips at the end of the OVA's) Then how come Suboshi does not know that his brother is not dead because he himself is not?

The Setting

Judging from the costumes and the palace, I am led into believeing that the setting is supposed to be ancient-China-like. However, there are a few problems with the setting. First of all, I believe that the author wrote somewhere that she researched ten books before she did the comic. In my humble opinion, that is not enough to find out about China. The customs in the mythical world do not represent any dynasty that China had. And one thing seemed to be overlooked. Ancient Chinese spoke CHINESE. Miaka does not understand Chinese. The book is a translation. That only means that the reader of the book can understand. Not Miaka. Also the costumes are not quite what Chinese people wore. However, I think the Comic version looks better than the real one. The best explanation I can find with the irregularities is that the they are not transported into ancient China at all. They are simply transported into a world that resembles ancient China.

Time

There is something that I want to ask. Watase Yuu said that Miaka's underwear will not be dirty because the time that she ages in the book is equivalent to the amount of time in the outside world. That means that Miaka only grows two days older and not a few months older. If that is the case, Miaka should take many years to recover from illnesses and wounds while she is in the book. Somebody also asked: "If she were having her period during the time she went into the book, how long would it contineue for?" ^_^;

Tasuki Rape Miaka?

Somewhere in the second part, Tasuki attempts to rape Miaka. Uh... would he actually do that? I thought he hates women.
