Dragon Lord was made in 1982, right after he got back from a failed attempt to break into the US market. First, it was to be the sequel to Young Master, and have the title "Young Master in Love", but eventually the script changed. He started making this movie without even having a finished script. Anyway, the opening of this movie is amazing. It starts out with a competition, a strange rugby type sport. There are about 4 teams, and the plan is to climb a huge pyramid made of bamboo, grab a golden bun, and, passing it to other teammates, get it into your teams' bag. The teams play at a furious rate. Jackie Chan, who is named "Dragon", does his very best to get the egg. He spins, flips, and hits until he finally gets the egg after a spectacular show of acrobatics. The film then goes on with a big part of the plot being the relationship between two good friends played by Jackie (Dragon) and Mars (Cowboy). Mars is Jackie's long time stuntman. He has been in films like Police Story (He plays the fake robber in Brigette Lin's apartment), and Project A. Eventually, Dragon and Cowboy get in a fight over a girl and don't speak to each other. They make up later. When Dragon plans to fly a kite over a fence to his love intrest's yard, which will have a letter saying his love for her, flys into the wrong house and onto the roof, he goes to capture it. He doesn't know that the house is full of criminals who are going to ship away China's treasures. I don't want to go and spoil the end of the movie, but Dragon finds out about the crime, and has to fight for his country, and against Hwang Jang Lee. The end fight is one of Jackie Chan's wildest ever.
Dragon Lord isn't Jackie's best, but it has it's moments. The bun pyramid sequence is amazing, the hacky sack type game in the middle of the film is also great (One scene took about 1,500 takes before Jackie was satisfied!), and the end fight is also spectacular. I give Dragon Lord 8 out of 10.
