However, they had left JohnMOG behind. They had to return to fetch him. Unfortunately, the word had spread about the Moogles' sudden change of heart, and armies had gathered to fight this new menace. Edgar led the way. His armies easily won the first battle, for the Moogles had not expected the fight. But this was not to remain the case! The Moogles quickly organized 5 million troops out of nowhere. Azala suddenly appeared on the scene, pledging loyalty to the Moogles. Other factions joined as well. With such power behind them, the Moogles concentrated on perfecting their deadly dances and began dabbling in powerful magic spells.
Not to be outdone, Edgar recruited a new member, General Alan, and the general's great armies were a major asset. The Espers tried to stay neutral, but when one of their people, Marie, was attacked and almost turned into Magicite, they sided with the humans. Kain, too, was persuaded to join, as were the forces of Doma. The Dark Lord, whose allegiance was with Doma, was unfortunately turned into a chicken by Magus, in a personal battle totally separate from the war, which led the Dark Lord to go berserk and turn all the Reptites into Lizar. Kaitlin and Rydia were almost dragged into the battle as well, especially when Mog (which Mog is still unknown) demanded that they be brought to him in order that they might be his queens, and sent troops to scour the world for them. Luckily, their combined magic was enough to stop the sick advance, and the two sorceresses went into hiding.
Meanwhile, a somber, purple-robe-clad figure stood beneath the ocean, gazing at the scene through the blood-red pendant she always wore. Determined to stop what was now being called the Moogle War by neutrals, she transported herself to the overworld. However, away from the energy core, away from Lavos, she found that her power was weakened terribly. She managed to send out a call of distress to the two sorceresses before she collapsed.
Rydia heard her call and promptly flew to the mysterious woman's side. "Oh, my..." she whispered when she saw the unconscious figure on the ground. Gently picking her up, Rydia brought her to Kaitlin, and under her care, the woman recovered. They found out her name was Schala. (Eventually Schala admitted that she was actually Nabiki, but had transformed herself into the sorceress so that she might be able to help stop the Moogle War. But Schala had changed her name so many times that she was accused of having an identity crisis. This crisis was later to prove rather stymying for the Dark Lord.)
The war was progressing at an alarming rate. Most of the discussion on the list had ceased. Members shrank from their computer screens, somewhat intimidated by the extent of the war. Azala and his Reptites, most likely due to the Dark Lord's influence, suddenly turned against Mog. All the world's airships were somehow destroyed. More of ChronoTrigger's forces entered the war when the Mystics came to town, with such questionable allegiance that neither side dared risk having them as their allies. (Didn't matter anyway, because Frog eventually killed them all, as well as their new leader, Kanar, the Dark Elf.)
Supremely powerful spells that existed only in the mind of the caster were also being used at this time. Weak spells such as Pearl and Ultima were things of the past. Now being used were Ultima4, Life7, and Heal5. As time went on, magic users developed even more powerful spells. Ikillyouandyoucannotcomeback and Thisspellkillsallyoursoldiers were only two of the insanely powerful spells used at this phase. Armies were being decimated and created at an extraterrestrial rate. Continents and castles and towns were completely destroyed one day, brought back the next, then destroyed again, then brought back again by incredible counterspells and recovery spells. The Moogle Army was chased in and out of every town at least once.
Finally, the poor majority of the ML banded together and stormed John's inbox, demanding that the Moogle War be moved to a separate list. They wanted to get on with their ML lives, and the war was totally ruining everything! At last, John bowed down to their demands and created a Moogle War list, available to those who requested a subscription.
The neutral members breathed a collective sigh of relief. Now perhaps things might turn back to normal.
Unfortunately, the separate list caused some problems. One was that after the war had been moved, hardly anyone posted. Another was that certain posts were sent only to the Moogle War list and so were not known to the majority. Yet another was that new members heard about the war and wanted to know more about it. This led to several older members starting a call for the war to begin again, only this time, with a DM to exercise some control. But the majority didn't buy it, and decided to keep out of it.
(Looking back, however, many people had to agree that the war had been rather fun for awhile. But one question lingered: What had really begun the Moogle War?)
However, the main problem dealt with Kain. Apparently he had been killed in the war and brought back to life so many times that people no longer knew whether he was dead or not. Added to the fact that no one knew his real name, and Kain was more mysterious than ever. Several people insisted that they were the one who brought Kain back to life, then others stepped in and denied Kain was alive. It was the curse/blessing of having two ML's that caused this confusion.
(Much later, after the Moogle War was firmly entrenched in the FFML history, the Dark Lord introduced the rest of the FFML members to two weird -- or so the DLE says -- friends of his, namely, Nick and Chris. Nick seems to have an obsession with death, while Chris seems to have his mind set on a particular FAQ from a certain game...)
So, was Kain truly alive? Or did he take his last ride on the Phantom Train? This became a major problem, and would have caused another war if the Dark Lord (the Dark Chicken for the time being) hadn't stepped in. This is his attempt to resurrect Kain, once and for all.
